Vatican II: misinterpretations and our modern moral malaise

Pope Benedict has chosen October 11, 2012 to begin the Year of Faith because it will mark the 50th anniversary of the start of Vatican II. Pope John XXIII opened the council's first session, and it was closed by Pope Paul VI on 8 December 1965. Present at the meetings was Bishop Karol Wojtyła, who became Pope John Paul II. Father Joseph Ratzinger, participated as a theological consultant, who is now Pope Benedict XVI.

Some like the Marcel Lefebvre over the years have argued against the validity and the interpretation of Vatican II. Lefebvre was in fact excommunicated for his defiance. With the Year of Faith, Pope Benedict lovingly invites the faithful to re-examine the documents of Vatican II, and more importantly to see how the teachings support and enrich the Church's tradition.

A recent lecture given by Fr. Johannes Grohe, professor of the History of the Church titled, "The Second Vatican Council in Relation to the Ecumenical Councils", emphasizes the continuity of the Church. He was speaking at the Pontifical University of Santa Croce for an academic celebration on St. Thomas Aquinas. In his talk Fr. Grohe said, "The Second Vatican Council is - and must remain - for the Catholic Church an expression of the solemn and supreme Magisterium in our time."

For those who exploited the council documents with liberal and personal interpretations, Fr. Grohe points out that this approach is erroneous, "One cannot renounce the need for a reception of the fundamental texts of Vatican II any more than one could renounce the work of other ecumenical councils in the past". Fr. Grohe stressed "that the Council opened on October 11, 1962, by John XXIII "was not intended to define new dogmas", but to propose "with supreme authority - for the entire Christian community - traditional doctrine in a new way and with a new pastoral attitude". Thus all the documents are valid and have 'universal value' and "are binding, and must be accepted even by those who wish to enter into communion with the Catholic Church". In total, there are sixteen documents from Vatican II. Why not, if you have not read any, begin by reading one them for the Year of Faith?

During the last 50 years, the progressivists have helped to promote a false 'spirit of Vatican II'. One is over the post-Vatican II liturgy of the new Roman Missal and the Tridentine Mass. Another misleading idea about Vatican II is that it gave the green light to all kinds of social/political issues with serious moral consequences. On the misconceptions about contraception, it was Paul VI that made the Church's position clear in 1968 with his encyclical, Humanae Vitae. Sadly the majority of Canadian bishops, as did those from most Western countries, didn't listen: they essentially instructed the faithful to follow their conscience on moral issues. But now think of the many issues that have wreaked so much moral havoc in these societies, including our own: abortion on demand, women priests, married priests, gay bishops, gay marriage and same-sex marriage.

The list goes on with schools and institutions that call themselves Catholic but are, in effect, Catholic-in-name-only. Consider the current battle in our schools against the secular "Equity" policy. What about the liberal use of condoms to fight AIDS, and government funding for abortions and embryonic stem-cell research. The Year of Faith can be time to re-visit Vatican II with the "spirit of truth" and re-discover what it means to be Catholic and to follow the teaching of the Church. Had we lived the true intentions of Vatican II, not the lies and sometimes deliberate misrepresentations, Canada today and the entire West would be a much better place. With the Year of Faith, Pope Benedict proposes to all of us another chance.

We conclude with the prophetic words of Pope John XXIII as he opened the Council proceedings in 1962, "The greatest concern of the Ecumenical Council is this: that the sacred deposit of Christian doctrine should be guarded and taught more efficaciously. That doctrine embraces the whole of man, composed as he is of body and soul. And, since he is a pilgrim on this earth, it commands him to tend always toward heaven."

"This demonstrates how our mortal life is to be ordered in such a way as to fulfill our duties as citizens of earth and of heaven, and thus to attain the aim of life as established by God. That is, all men, whether taken singly or as united in society, today have the duty of tending ceaselessly during their lifetime toward the attainment of heavenly things and to use for this purpose only, the earthly goods, the employment of which must not prejudice their eternal happiness." Whitney Houston's life and death: a time to tell the truth

As you read the following three statements, try to guess where they are taken from: 1. "Life and physical health are precious gifts entrusted to us by God. We must take reasonable care of them, taking into account the needs of others and the common good. Concern for the health of its citizens requires that society help in the attainment of living-conditions that allow them to grow and reach maturity: food and clothing, housing, health care, basic education, employment, and social assistance." (2288)

2. "The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense. Clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to practices gravely contrary to the moral law." (2291)

3. "If morality requires respect for the life of the body, it does not make it an absolute value. It rejects a neo-pagan notion that tends to promote the cult of the body, to sacrifice everything for it's sake, to idolize physical perfection and success at sports. By its selective preference of the strong over the weak, such a conception can lead to the perversion of human relationships." (2289)

I don't know what your answer is, but these quotes are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Are you surprised? We shouldn't be because as baptized Christians we ought to be familiar with the contents of the text that should be our guide in explaining and living our faith. What does this have to do with the death of Whitney Houston? Normally Everyday for Life Canada doesn't cover these events. But we thought that her death is a symptom of so much that is morally wrong with our modern society, that we decided to respond. If I were still teaching in a high school classroom, this would be my lesson.

The early death, at 48, of Whitney Houston - like that of Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse - has made and continues to make all the front pages and screens of the mainstream/social media. The reaction, for the most part, has been one of shock and dismay. Already, both her friends and the media, have hailed her as a princess of song, a goddess and an angel. She was kind to everybody; she will be missed, and some have said that her legacy will be that of having had one of the best female voices of all time. The accolades and the hyperboles will no doubt continue.

But as a Christian society, whether in life or in death, we should be telling each other the truth, not scandal and lies. As a society we are in denial about the need to respect, first of all our own body, and secondly that of others, including their souls. Why aren't Whitney's friends telling the truth: she died probably because of her indulgence with drugs, prescription or illicit, and alcohol. Her decline was made easier because her friends overlooked the demon in her life only to focus on her success, fame and wealth. For many Whitney was an asset, not a person first.

Perhaps she herself was in denial about her temptations. In short, she abused her life and was abused by others. Just think of the doctors that prescribed her the legal drugs. Take away the fame, and this modern tragedy takes place in so many homes, with the difference that it doesn't make media headlines, but the pain and the loss is no less.

Where were her applauding friends and fans in showing a concern for her health? Where was her ex-husband who seems so concerned about her death? Was there anyone helping her exercise the virtue of temperance? or to avoid the soul destructive use of drugs? Nobody, even those who believe in "the cult of the body", can escape the moral and physical consequences of the way we live our lives. We are responsible for the choices we make. In the end, they help to define the meaning of our lives. We cannot and must not try to gamble, sing or drug our way into heaven.

We don't ask these difficult questions because we are judging her, only God can be the one to judge, but we say these things to try to come to terms with the truth of her death. We do this hoping that her fans, young people and all of us can learn to avoid the destructive moral deceptions inherent in the life of a "star". We are all confronted by the same temptations. By glossing over the truth of her death, as a Christian society we continue to make it very hard to follow the Commandments and thus a Christian life. We cannot encourage indirectly or directly anyone to do evil for, "Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come." (Lk 17:1)

We are made in the image of God. If we truly believe that, then we must respect our physical health and our lives as coming from God. Both our bodies and our souls are not ours, but are gifts entrusted to us for a time. By taking good care, of not just of our own bodies, but also helping to take good care of the lives of others, we help to build the common good and more importantly we hope through the mercy of God to save our immortal souls: this is truly the "greatest love of all".

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Who will protect Ontario's school children?

The provincial government in Ontario has now for years been pushing school boards to accept a radical social/sexual indoctrination agenda. In 2010, the McGuinty Liberals had to withdraw the Health and Physical Education curriculum because it contained explicit sexual material that many believed to be inappropriate for young children. Parents were outraged that their government would try to teach children what Christians see as immoral content with little or no consultation.

In 2011, schools began implementing the "Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy", and presently the proposed Bill 13, if passed, will see the legal protection of dozens of socially constructed sexual "orientations". There is a campaign by provincial governments in Canada to normalize the LGTB, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life-style, and in a number of provinces to establish gay/straight alliances in schools. In Ontario, this is now clear because McGuinty has rejected the Catholic document called "Respecting Difference" on how to deal with the issue of bullying in schools. It was released this past week by the Catholic trustees and backed by the Ontario Bishops.

In all these adult efforts pushing for political correctness, who is speaking for the children? Who will protect Ontario's students from this psychological and moral abuse? School boards and teachers' unions have not been there to defend students. In fact, to help schools normalize and promote the LGBT life-style, boards are using resource Internet guides written by activist groups like Egale for grades 7-12 called MyGSA. According to Egale, the website is for youth and educators across this country for "safer and inclusive education". The Toronto District Board of Education website currently links and endorses this site.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, the public teachers' union, has already developed a number of guides that are friendly and promote the LGTB agenda. One is called, Creating Spaces: Embedding Equity in Education, and another is titled, Shout Out: Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia and Heterosexism. I leave the suggestive titles and made up words to speak for themselves. All this is happening because our government, our school boards and teachers' unions are all in full support of instructing political correctness. Very sadly, however, children have only one line of defence left: their parents must protect them.

Parents can no longer trust governments, school boards and teachers' unions

Why are our governments using tax payer money and partnering with Egale to offer training workshops on “LGBT”? This sexual indoctrination in our schools and our society is the result of policies deceptively called, "Inclusive and Equitable" education. Of course it helps, at least in Ontario, to silence and buy the co-operation of many voters with the Liberals' decision to fund All-Day Kindergarten. This unnecessary extra schooling is pedagogically unsound. The added year will also cost Ontario taxpayers billions of dollars; nevertheless, this is of little importance to politicians interested in getting votes and appeasing consciences. Did the government ever bother to ask if all-day early schooling is good for children and makes them "happier"?

The Liberals didn't consult with Ontario parents and citizens if they wanted the LGTB curriculum. We think we know why: the majority of parents and students don't consider the LGTB agenda a priority or something they would endorse. The LGTB is completely politically driven and socially manufactured. As a result, the ruling government can toss aside even the mere appearance of passing "Equity" policies and laws democratically. Why do you think they had the effrontery never to mention the LGTB issue during the election if they believe it's so important?

When schools boards, governments and unions put politics and self-interest at the expense of parents and children they begin to forget that they are paid to serve the people and not rule over them. Why concern yourself with a consultation process when you can simply get bureaucrats to approve the deception of "Equity" education. The government merely instructed the ministers of education, got the school boards and trustees on side with more programs and money. Then they launched a political campaign about the need to end bullying in schools and to do that, among other things, it mandated and encouraged schools to implement the doublespeak of the "Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy".

The last step was to collaborate with gay activists to provide the schools with the resources to accomplish the task. If you listen to the LGBT rhetoric, it seems that governments have now decided that one of the most important issues facing Ontario and the nation is the protection and support of students with a dozen different sexual orientations. But please read on, regrettably there's more.

Egale’s MyGSA website goes further and lists for visitors, these could be young students, homosexual organizations like Outrage!, Stonewall, PFLAG, and pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood. The website’s recommended resources includes a book for teens called Coming Out: A Handbook for Men that includes sex advice involving grotesque sexual acts not worth mentioning here. To suggest that this material is a good resource for students is psychologically and morally abusive. People in authority are taking advantage of their positions and tempting students to sin by exploring immoral behaviour. Parental warning: your children can be visiting websites like MyGSA fully endorsed by some teachers, your local school board, teachers' unions and our provincial government. Parents should not trust any of this.

Who will protect the children?

Given all this evidence, it's only natural that parents be suspicious of governments and their political educational agenda. Politicians may be working to please people's sexual orientations and get re-elected, but who is there to protect the children and their souls? Isn't it part of a government's responsibility to keep children from harm? And to be building the common good? Don't students have the right to their moral and sexual innocence? Parents are the ones who have the right to teach their children when it comes to morals and human sexuality. The government, the schools boards and teacher unions that ought to be defending students instead are introducing programs that are abusive to their moral and sexual wellbeing. This is a betrayal of the trust students have for adults.

In addition,there is a total disregard of Christian values that are based on natural law. Governments must stop imposing this biased and misguided manufactured view of the person and human sexuality. The push to normalize the LGTB sexual agenda has no natural, moral or legal basis. The acceptance of the LGTB lifestyle has been masked as "human rights" and turned into a topic of taboo because anyone who dares to disagree is quickly attacked as being "homophobic" or bigoted. But shouldn't a truly "Equity and Inclusive" policy make plenty of room for those who don't accept it? But we digress here since this principle would be true only if the policy had been developed and passed democratically.

In the end, the only true hope is for parents to protect their children's morality and true sexuality; they must act quickly before the province and school boards turns the children against their parents on these issues. Our government is now bullying Christians: it's high time for parents to reclaim their rights and to push back. If parents don't defend their children from this Orwellian nightmare, who will? We hope that parents reclaim the fundamental responsibility and God given right and freedom to raise their children with Christian morals and values. Dear reader if parents don't do this, who will protect Ontario's children?

Santo Natale 2011: il messaggio del Presidente UCEMI nel mondo

Cari amici,

è trascorso un altro anno e siamo di nuovo arrivati al Santo Natale 2012. Dall'alto della mia
veneranda età posso dire che questa festa e la più bella dell'anno ed è quella più intimamente legata
alle famiglie, in particolare quelle degli emigranti.

La prima famiglia che ha sperimentato l'emigrazione è stata quella di Nazaret, formata da Gesù, Giuseppe e Maria.
Essi hanno conosciuto dapprima il trasferimento di Maria e Giuseppe per farsi censire ed è proprio durante questo viaggio che è nato Gesù.
Come gli emigranti di un tempo e gli immigrati di oggi, nemmeno per la Sacra Famiglia c'era spazio per un'accoglienza dignitosa. Il problema dell’accoglienza rimane perciò di viva attualità evangelica: ero forestiero e sono stato accolto dice Gesù nel Vangelo di Matteo (Mt. 25,35).
Nel 2011 in Italia è stato fatto il 15° Censimento della popolazione e abbiamo registrato gli immigranti che vivono, alcuni da diversi anni, in mezzo a noi. Sono residenti in Italia, hanno i figli nati qui, ma non sono cittadini italiani. Una contraddizione perché, a distanza di duemila anni, non c’è spazio per loro, come ai tempi di Gesù!
Poi è stata la volta della fuga in Egitto, simbolo emblematico della Migrantes, perché è proprio da questo avvenimento s’ispira l'impegno della Chiesa a favore delle migrazioni.

Anche ai nostri giorni, molte popolazioni sono costrette a rifugiarsi nell'Occidente, in Europa, per scappare dalle persecuzioni, dalle calamità e dalle carestie. Mi auguro che, come emigranti, sappiate tener sempre presente il dovere dell'accoglienza, il piacere della riconoscenza e la memoria del nostro passato, per affrontare con la dovuta esperienza il futuro che ci attende.
L'Europa in generale e l'Italia in particolare, stanno attraversando un momento molto difficile, pieno di incognite e le grosse problematicità, soprattutto dal punto di vista economico e dell'occupazione. Non dobbiamo però disperarci ma impegnare, ciascuno nel proprio ambito, a concorrere nella ricerca delle soluzioni che consentano di superare questa bufera.
La coesione sociale e l'unico elemento che può consentirci di essere partecipi al grosso sforzo di ricostruzione morale e finanziaria dell'Italia e dell'Europa. Le associazioni, comprese quelle degli emigranti, alle quali noi in Italia dobbiamo aggiungere quella degli immigrati, sono strumenti indispensabili per favorire la coesione sociale.

Tutte le associazioni, compresa l’UCEMI, hanno vissuto con apprensione i vari passaggi parlamentari di questi due ultimi anni, che intendevano comprimere gli spazi dedicati all'associazionismo dell'emigrazione.
Noi non diamo giudizi politici, ma solo valutazioni legate all’interesse dell’emigrazione e anche in questo caso, il giudizio è quantomeno deludente.
Abbiamo assistito a un disegno scellerato, perché s’inseriva in un discorso più vasto di diminuzione degli spazi di rappresentanza riservati agli emigranti, vale a dire la riduzione dei COMITES sia come quantità sia come numero dei componenti, nonché l'eliminazione dalla CGIE dei rappresentanti delle associazioni centrali che si occupano di emigrazione.
Da ultimo, era stata proposta la riduzione dei parlamentari eletti all'estero, passando dagli attuali diciotto a soltanto cinque. In verità non hanno fatto molto per gli emigranti perché presi dalle logiche politiche e non invece svincolati da esse, per rispondere direttamente a chi li ha votati, cioè a voi emigranti.

Tuttavia, pure in presenza di una grave crisi economica, non è possibile che quattro milioni e mezzo di emigranti con passaporto italiano si trovino da un giorno all'altro con una scarsa rappresentanza dei loro interessi civili, sociali e di cittadinanza.
Noi non sappiamo cosa succederà con il nuovo Governo; a tale riguardo speriamo però che le associazioni degli emigranti abbiano maggiore ascolto e che gli emigranti abbiano una rappresentanza, anche in futuro, non inferiore all'attuale.
Per questi motivi d’incertezza abbiamo rimandato momentaneamente le nostre iniziative dirette, in quanto ci siamo affidati all'operato della Consulta Nazionale dell'Emigrazione, attualmente presieduta dal vicepresidente dell’UCEMI, Luigi Papais.
Egli è stato così notevolmente impegnato, poiché ha dovuto seguire da vicino il problema della riduzione degli spazi associativi, cercando di opporsi assieme alle altre associazioni nazionali operanti nel settore a un disegno di annullamento del nostro ruolo di rappresentanti del mondo dell'emigrazione. Naturalmente il suo tempo a disposizione si è ridotto notevolmente. Voi sapete che l’UCEMI, data la mia età, sopravvive grazie al suo impegno in qualità di mio stretto collaboratore, che si definirà con l’assemblea tanto attesa, più volte rinviata, poiché intendiamo apportare delle modifiche statutarie ed allargare la nostra cerchia associativa ad altre realtà con le quali stiamo dialogando.
L'amico Papais a febbraio 2012 andrà finalmente in pensione dalla Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, compito che lo impegnava non poco, poiché doveva seguire il lavoro, l’UCEMI e la CNE. Tra poco quindi sarà più libero in grado di dare le sue migliori energie per la nostra UCEMI.

Potremo così fare alcune pre-assemblee, una nell'America del Nord e l'altra nell'America Latina, dato che all'Australia abbiamo dedicato parecchie attenzioni in occasione della GMG di Sidney.
Nell'America Latina potremmo dare un aiuto dalla Chiesa locale in preparazione alla GMG del 2013, già programmata in Brasile, mobilitando le nostre associazioni affinché a questa manifestazione molto importante e molto sentita dai giovani si sentano coinvolti anche gli emigranti
di origine italiana. Quindi, prevedo che a metà dell'anno prossimo, potrò finalmente concludere, con
l’assemblea generale, la mia lunga esperienza alla Presidenza dell’UCEMI, in considerazione della mia età che, nonostante la buona salute di cui grazie a Dio godo, non mi consente di operare efficacemente come un tempo.
Penso, cari amici, di avervi spiegato dettagliatamente la nostra attuale condizione associativa, certo che continuerete a operare con l’impegno di sempre a favore degli emigranti italiani nel mondo, secondo l'ispirazione cristiana che ci contraddistingue.

La nostra è una vocazione e un servizio che hanno alle spalle una lunga tradizione, sia di Magistero della Chiesa, sia di presenza disinteressata da vincoli politici o di altra natura, centrata esclusivamente sulla persona umana dei migranti e delle loro famiglie, come ci ricorda anche quest’anno Papa Benedetto XVI nel suo messaggio per la 98ma Giornata del Migrante e del Rifugiato.

A tutti noi il compito di divulgare questo messaggio e di far conoscere la Dottrina Sociale della Chiesa, un patrimonio che torna utile per superare le difficoltà del momento,come del resto lo è sempre stata. E’ il patrimonio della Chiesa e di conseguenza anche della nostra Associazione, che non si mette perciò contro nessuno, ma che si apre indistintamente a tutti i migranti.
Ringrazio perciò tutti i nostri rappresentanti nelle varie associazioni che operano nel mondo, e assieme ad essi tutti i sacerdoti missionari che lavorano a fianco degli emigranti italiani e di tutti gli emigranti, partendo dal Direttore generale della Migrantes e dei suoi collaboratori.
Spetta a noi laici impegnati il compito di collaborare con i sacerdoti italiani e con quelli delle Chiese di arrivo e di raccogliere il testimone dei sacerdoti italiani che non fossero più avvicendati per causa della scarsità di vocazioni, per fare in modo che l’esperienza ecclesiale degli italiani nel mondo rimanga comunque viva.

Auguro a tutti voi e alle vostre famiglie un lieto Santo Natale e un Buon Anno 2012 che, speriamo, sia un anno di svolta positiva, sotto tutti i punti di vista. Fate quest’augurio anche ai sacerdoti italiani e alle autorità diplomatiche e di rappresentanza, e alle altre associazioni.

Lessons Learned: Battling EIE at the TCDSB and the Province

I think you would agree that when it comes to life experiences, just as in a good classroom, lessons should be learned to avoid future mistakes and to live better lives. However, in order to do this, we need to be vigilant and observant. In the recent battle parents had with the Toronto Catholic District School Board, TCDSB, over first, approving the Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy, and then, in trying to get the trustees to pass amendments, much can le learned to try to safeguard the truth and future survivability of Catholic education in Ontario.

As Catholics, we need to ask ourselves why is Catholicism in Canada and in the province of Ontario fallen to such a low ebb? Here we all need to examine our consciences. When most of us are busy living comfortable lives, we risk being blinded from today’s ideological deceptive policies by those who want to completely destroy our religion and remove God from public discourse. Surely the EIE strategy is a perfect example of this. We have not been on guard and the Trojan Horse has now entered our schools. What are we going to do?

So one must assume that part of the current difficulty in fighting back the McGuinty government on the Equity policy is the fact that many Catholics within the school system aren't making much of an effort in living and protecting the faith. Otherwise how do you explain, that there's a number of teachers and administrators who are openly willing and ready to promote homosexuality through gay/straight alliances in Catholic schools? How do you explain a Catholic parent who makes a passionate plea before trustees for Catholic schools to establish gay/straight alliances?

How do you account for the Ontario Catholic Teachers’ Association to fully support the Equity policy even when it defends and promotes homosexuality, gay/straight alliances in schools and the undoing of traditional marriage? Good Catholic teachers should get together and refuse to pay union dues because the union in no longer truly Catholic. Surely there are some lawyers and Catholic teachers that could take this to court. Why are teachers paying $1000 a year in union dues to a union prepared to defy the faith? This is both a moral and a legal issue. We need to be honest with our children and ourselves. We cannot save the faith and the Catechism if those of us who profess to be Catholic don’t try to practice it and live it in both our private lives, and in our schools, our unions, our government, our places of work and at home.

Throughout the TCDSB charade of the consultation process with the community and after several months of involvement, those parents who actively participated to defeat the Equity policy and have amendments passed, can take solace in the fact that there were many who were came to meetings to witness for the faith and to defend Catholic education and the Catechism. The trustees, with some exceptions, refused to listen not just to the will of the parents, those who are the first educators of their children, which is important enough in a democracy, but they defied the teaching of the Church.

Here’s a question that trustees who voted to support the Equity policy should in all honesty ask themselves: why do I want to be a Catholic trustee, if I do not fully support the Catechism and what it teaches? The same question applies to teachers, parents, superintendents and directors. All baptized Christians are free not to believe in what the Church teaches about human sexuality or anything else, but then as a Catholic leader, a trustee or an administrator one can no longer effectively and truthfully do the job, and in that case, honesty would lead one to resign. Don't we owe this primary responsibility to God and to those innocent children? A true confession would help immensely in sorting out the moral mess we are presenting to our children.

Nevertheless, in everything that has happened, an important precedent has been established: many Catholics should now see the need to defend Catholic education from a government and school boards that are prepared to compromise and accommodate these deceptions. Parents have witnessed the importance of making trustees accountable at meetings and at the next election. Why would any parent re-elect a provincial Liberal government that wants to destroy Catholic education, freedom of conscience and boldly violates parental rights? It’s no secret why the Catholic union is totally behind the Liberals. Did you know that about half of trustees in Ontario were acclaimed in the 2003 elections? And doesn’t evil thrive where apathy prevails?

Parents have learned some great lessons: they have come to recognize that they have denominational rights and can use them to guide their children’s curriculum and ensure that whatever teachers, administrators and board officials do is aligned with the Catechism. Parents have also learned that the Education Act allows them to remove their children from any classroom instruction or school activity that they object to on religious or conscientious reasons. Finally, parents have discovered that they were never truly consulted and their rights respected in passing and now in implementing the Equity policy as new schools year 2011-12 begins. All this we hope will lead to a time of awakening as we vote for a new provincial government.

Another lesson is that Catholic leadership is in crisis. Catholic leadership is much more than student achievement, implementing government regulations and making sure that school buildings are properly maintained. Catholic leadership ought to be synonymous with virtuous leadership. It's about serving and protecting Catholic education, and Catholic children are central to this evangelical mission. As baptized people we all have this spiritual role. To leave it solely to our priests and bishops is to abandon our Christian responsibility. But sadly there was little of evidence of this Christian leadership across the province as the Equity policy was passed in every Catholic and public board.

In the end, educational changes in Catholic and public schools we'll only come when parents demand them. We have a provincial election underway so vote responsibly. Contact your trustees, your local school, administrators, board officials, priest and the archbishop and express your concerns about the Equity policy. Monitor closely your child's curriculum and contact the media to let them know what you think. Parents must guard their children's education: “... And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea." (Matthew 18:5-6)

These personal observations are offered in the spirit of service. It’s an effort to share so that together with prayer we are can continue to defend our faith. I'll end with the fitting advise we find in the First Letter of St. Peter: “Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence.” (I Peter 3:15)

Open Letter in Support of Parental Rights in Education

This letter can be used by parents as a template in an effort to exercise their rights to safeguard what children learn in school. These rights apply equally to parents who have children in Catholic and public schools. Only through greater participation can parents retain and exercise this responsibility, as first educators of their children, and be gatekeepers for morality and reason in education in Ontario's elementary and secondary schools. Governments, as we see with the Equity policy, are a poor and potentially dangerous substitute for loving parental leadership. The open letter is not meant to replace, but to complement personal contact with teachers and administrators. Of course homeschooling, private schools and teaching the Catechism and family beliefs at home are some of the alternatives that parents can and need to consider to protect traditional family values.)

Dear Teacher/Principal/Superintendent,

During the coming school year 2011-12, schools boards in Ontario will begin to implement the Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy. As parents, we fully support the idea that all schools be free of bullying, discrimination, and be places where there’s equal and fair treatment of all students and staff.

However, as caring parents we would like to make our concern very clear at the start of the school year: Should any curriculum be taught to my son/daughter regarding sex education of any kind, including homosexuality, sexual orientation and the re-definition traditional marriage/family, we want this communicated to us before the material is presented and be given the opportunity to withdraw our children from this instruction. Our parental concern applies equally to anyone invited from the community to talk to students about these intimate issues.

The values regarding sexuality and marriage that are promoted in school and at home is something our family cares deeply about. In the history of Ontario Education, there is a strong precedent to respect parental rights by making provisions to exempt our children from any instruction because of our beliefs and on conscientious grounds.

We do want to be involved in what our children are learning in school. School boards in Ontario have always been supportive of parents who have objected to curriculum for reasons of religion and conscience. We trust you will accommodate this request as it applies to any aspect of the new Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy.

We look forward to working with the teachers, the principal and the superintendent. If for any reason, you cannot honour our parental rights, we want to be informed.

Conto alla rovescia a Teopoli: Ricominciano le colonie

Gravenhurst, Ontario – Appena conclusosi a Teopoli il ritiro spirituale dedicato ai giovani adulti del Newman Centre (Centro Cattolico studentesco dell’Università di Toronto), Società Unita si appresta ad aprire i battenti della Città di Dio alle colonie estive per bambini.

Il prossimo 5 luglio, infatti, avrà luogo la 38ma stagione della Teopoli Summer Experience, che accoglie bambini dai 6 ai 16 anni nell’incantevole cornice di Muskoka, in 4 tornate da dodici giorni ciascuna.

Nota presso la comunità italiana per la croce eretta da Padre Claudio Piccinini C.P., su ispirazione di Suor Carmelina della Croce, Teopoli non è solo meta di pellegrinaggi e ritiri spirituali per adulti, ma anche un luogo di ricreazione e di formazione spirituale per ragazzi.

Accanto ad attività ricreative quali, canottaggio, nuoto, escursioni, falò notturni, ed altri sport, l’approfondimento della teologia, la musica, l’arte, il teatro, e i giochi di gruppo, fanno di questa colonia un’esperienza unica nel suo genere.

Infatti, la Teopoli Summer Experience si distingue da un generico campo estivo per il fatto che non è solo un luogo di svago e divertimento ma soprattutto luogo di raccoglimento, in cui particolare importanza viene riconosciuta ai precetti cattolici e al valore della famiglia.

Con la celebrazione giornaliera della Santa Messa e la recita del Santo Rosario, a sancire l’apertura e la chiusura della giornata tipica, i giovani fanno propri gli strumenti e le abitudini dello stile di vita cristiano.

Tale modello trova la sua più alta espressione nelle figure dei volontari e benefattori italiani, il cui contributo è vitale alla realizzazione e al proseguimento di questo progetto. Il servizio mensa, lavanderia, e manutenzione del centro sono completamente sotto la loro tutela.

Torture seeks to annihilate the victim’s personality and denies the inherent
dignity of the human being. The United Nations has condemned torture from the

La Giornata mondiale del Rifugiato, che si celebra il 20 giugno, è un appuntamento a cui si guarda con sempre maggiore interesse, sia per la rilevanza che ha assunto nel tempo questo fenomeno, sia per la crescente attenzione dell’opinione pubblica e dei media.

Quest’anno poi diventa più che mai occasione per fare il punto su numerose e diversificate questioni da parte di quanti si occupano attivamente dei richiedenti protezione internazionale.

Le vicende di questi primi sei mesi del 2011 ci hanno infatti particolarmente sollecitato e richiamato alla necessità di un ulteriore sforzo per garantire tutela e accoglienza a coloro che cercano rifugio da guerre e persecuzioni.

Costretti a partire, nel pericolo, senza speranza, senza riparo, senza nazionalita', senza un posto sicuro, in baracche o in tendopoli, violentati dalle guerre e dalle armi, lasciati dietro le sbarre, senza istruzione e senza medicine.

Sunday June 12, UCEMI Toronto presented a wonderful concert in honour of Blessed John Paul II’s beatification. There were well over five hundred people who attended this special musical tribute at St. Peter’s Church in Woodbridge.

Fr. Thomas Rosica from Salt and Television, hosted the event, and shared some of his private experiences with John Paul II during World Youth Day In Toronto. One of them was the fact that when John Paul II came to Toronto, special preparations had been made for him to embark and disembark from the plane, but he insisted on walking every step on his own.

The special guest, for the occasion, was Michiko Hayashi who came from Italy and is an opera singer with La Fenice Theatre in Venice. She sang selections from her latest CD called. “Sognando Lui”, (Dreaming of him). Giovannina Menin wrote the music and the lyrics as a tribute to John Paul II. In her words, John Paul II was a great Pope and “a man who knew how to share the light of his faith to warm the spirits of people.”

The afternoon began with George Marcello from Step by Step, the Organ Transplant Association. He entered the church with a torch blessed by John Paul II to bring an awareness of the need for organ and tissues donation.

In his introductory remarks, Giovanni Riccitelli, President of UCEMI Toronto, welcomed everyone to the concert to celebrate the beatification of John Paul II, a man of profound faith who inspired millions of people. He also noted that the event was part of Italian Heritage Month, the first such celebration in Ontario.

The concert began with touching performances from soprano Michiko Hayashi. She sang, “Sognando Lui”, “Solo Gocce” and “Parlando Con Te” (Dreaming of Him, Only Drops and Talking to You). There were two touching songs by two young singers. Alesandra Trimmeliti who sang, “Shout to the Lord” and Michael Nasato who sang , “Agnus Dei”. There were a number of selections sung by the Coro San Marco directed by Daniele Colla. Also, Bruno Trimmeliti, who is a member of the Coro San Marco joined Alesandra as they sang a stirring father-daughter duet of “The Lord’s prayer.”

Giampietro Posocco accompanied by the choir and soprano Hayashi played the trumpet to his own composition of Ave Maria”. The pianist for the event was Deyi Ye who was born in Shanghai, China. The final song was “Va Pensiero” by Giuseppe Verdi from the opera Nabucco. This is a well-known composition among Italians and is derived from Psalm 137. Most Italians consider it their second national anthem. In English, it is known as the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.

From the concluding ovation, it was obvious to everyone there that the event was a total success. It was the perfect way to remember and celebrate the Great and Blessed John Paul II. Musically, even if only for a few moments, we know that those present were truly able to soar to heavenly heights.

Conference May 18: " SUDAN TOWARD THE FUTURE"

Il 9 Luglio 2011 rappresentanti di Stato e di chiesa sono convenuti da tutto il mondo a Juba per celebrare l’Indipendenza della 54° Nazione Africana, la Repubblica del Sud Sudan. Dopo il referendum dello scorso gennaio, che ha avuto un voto pressochè unanime, nasce così un nuovo Stato libero e genuinamente africano con tutta la sua freschezza, rischio e povertà. Il Sudan di oggi, paese molto inquieto, grande come il Quebec e l’Ontario messi insieme, confina a sud col Kenia e l’Uganda, a ovest col Congo, la Repubblica Centrafricana, Darfur e il Ciad, a nord con la Libia e l’Egitto e ad est con l’Etiopia e l’ Eritrea, bisogna ricordarlo, è reduce da un’ aggressiva presenza al nord di una minoranza musulmana che si è avvalsa del potere statale, economico e militare per imporre per anni “la conformità” tramite il Corano e la lingua araba. Il sud ribellatosi sin dal principio a questa monocultura fu dichiarato “ribelle” e “terrorista”: in 20 anni di guerra civile ci sono stati 2 milioni di morti, e altri 5 milioni sono stati costretti a migrare in altri paesi.

Cosa riserba il futuro ora a questo Paese? A questa domanda ha cercato di rispondere l’UCEMI alcune settimane fa invitando Padre Michael Schultheis, il missionario gesuita che opera in Africa da oltre 40 anni nel settore dell’istruzione secondaria con la conferenza “ Sudan verso il futuro” tenutasi presso i missionari della consolata. Da anni– ha detto in apertura Padre Michael - la chiesa vive con il popolo sofferente del Sudan, con i suoi eroi e con una guerra interminabile, auspicando la nascita del nuovo Paese e di un popolo con la sua nuova identità. La chiesa continuerà la sua presenza, decisa a fare i primi passi a fianco del popolo del Sud Sudan nella ricerca del suo sviluppo. “D’altra parte” ha chiesto con convinzione al pubblico presente: “In una società post-conflittuale, quando molte delle infrastrutture sono state distrutte, chi aiuta a ricostruire le relazioni sociali?”.

I missionari italiani, soprattutto i Comboniani, ha detto Padre Michael Schultheis, hanno molto a che fare con la storia del Sudan degli ultimi 100 anni, e anche con quella del nord-est del Monzambico dove oltre ad aver stabilito la chiesa locale continuano a garantire l’istruzione della popolazione. Negli anni 60- ha sottolineato - anche per i missionari la vita diventò difficile e molti missionari italiani vennero espulsi: il lato positivo fù però che ciò permise alla chiesa locale, attraverso i catechisti, di avere una propria connotazione indigena. Ha parlato dei suoi amici: P. Kizito Sesana, P. Cirillo, Franco Ponzi; del nord particolarmente asciutto, degli allagamenti occasionali del Nilo, del ritrovamento dei molti simboli dei primi cristiani (croci, riti funerari, templi), dei Nuba e dei guerrieri di cui si parla anche negli Atti degli Apostoli... ma soprattutto dell’ Università Cattolica, un’idea di cui si ricominciò a parlare nel 2003, in occasione della visita di papa Giovanni Paolo II in Sudan e che dopo gli accordi di pace del 2005, nel 2007 vide finalmente l’inizio e attualizzazione, al nord , come al sud del Paese, con le facoltà di ingegneria, di economia, di agricoltura e di Formazione didattica. È stata la volta poi del Dott.Abate Wori Abate, il primo rifugiato Sudanese in Canada oltre che esperto della comunità sudanese, che nella sua toccante relazione, ha voluto raccontare la sua vicissitudine personale. Il sud Sudan, ha detto fra l’altro, è passato attraverso un mucchio di difficoltà e destabilizzazione e senza i missionari non ci sarebbe stata istruzione in sud Sudan.

Il sud Sudan ha di fronte un cammino arduo da affrontare – ha detto- avendo ancora l’80 % della popolazione analfabeta, ma l’Università dà un segno di speranza e persone come P. Michael, piantando questo seme di speranza fa sì che questa nuova nazione possa mettere le radici guardando al futuro positivamente. P. Marco Bagnarol, responsabile del settore informativo della Consolata, ha infine parlato dei suoi 7 anni in Uganda, dei suoi contatti col campo profughi Sudanese, e del senso africano del “presto”, di quell’indipendenza che si apettava già 17 anni fa e che giunge ora.

Tra il pubblico erano presenti tra gli altri anche Thomas Taban persona di rilievo della chiesa Sudanese di Toronto, Mary Beny del movimento femminile Sudanese, Jenny Cafiso direttrice insieme ad altri componenti della Canadian Jesuit International, P. Claudio Piccinini insieme a tutto lo staff di Radio Teopoli, P. Vitaliano Papais per l’ Italian Pastoral Commission, e Giuseppe Carraro in rappresentanza del Comitato che ha raccolto tra la comunità italiana un significativo contributo offerto per la nuova Università di Agricoltura in Juba, un gesto di solidarietà e un auspicio di prosperità e benessere per una terra fino ad ora troppo violentata. Il progetto della università e’ un investimento della comunità cattolica italiana di Toronto per camminare a fianco di questo popolo, formando I responsabili del nuovo Sud Sudan, perché proprio mentre in Libia, in Costa d’Avorio e altrove le armi risuonano violente e la morte semina distruzione, l’evento storico che il referendum ha sancito e che ora si sta realizzando segni un nuovo modo di vivere e di fare la storia nell’Africa contemporanea.

Sadly the TCDSB Approves the Government Equity Strategy

The Toronto Catholic District School Board approved the equity and inclusive education policy at their May 19 board meeting. There were many Catholic parents present at the meeting who were against the policy. A number of concerned individuals presented thoughtful, respectful, well-informed, caring and convincing arguments trying to persuade the trustees to reject the policy.   The trustees will vote on a number of proposed amendments to the policy at their June meeting. Some of the trustees wanted the board's legal counsel to assess the proposed changes. Why many of the trustees were so ready to take advice from board counsel   should raise questions of objectivity and representative competency.

It was made very clear at the meeting that the board bureaucrats wanted the policy to pass. At one point the board lawyer tried to force the vote with the suggestion that the board could once more fall under government control. However, nobody advised the trustees that they had every right to reject the policy. The Catholic school board already has the best equity policy, better than any provincial government can mandate: the Ten Commandments. Catholic teaching gives teachers a solid moral approach to combat discrimination of every kind in all schools; provincial legislation is totally unnecessary.

The central unresolved issue is whether Catholic denominational rights and Catholic teaching will be compromised with the new policy. Catholic parents have every reason to fear that groups can try to use the policy to undermine the teaching of the Catholic Church. When to final vote was finally taken, the policy passed by a 7-4 margin.

Catholic parents should be proud of the input by trustees Angela Kennedy and John Del Grande in defense of the faith. They made several attempts throughout the meeting to protect Catholic teaching. Angela Kennedy proposed to amend the draft policy and remove any reference to the Ontario Human Rights Code. She wanted to change the wording so to that the board's denominational rights "take precedence over human rights protection."   John Del Grande put forward an amendment to make sure “a Catholic teacher will provide classroom instruction that doesn't contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church." These amendments and others will be voted upon at the board's June 16 meeting.  

  There were parents at the meeting who were concerned that the policy’s position on same-sex attractions is completely at odds with the teaching of the Catholic Church.   Trustees were presented with a 2,700-signature petition asking them to reject the policy. The worry of many   parents are the unanswered questions: Why has every (one still has to decide) catholic board in the province so readily accepted a policy that has the real potential to dismantle Catholic teaching on human ethics and sexuality? and why is our school board so willing to follow them thereby disregarding Catholic teaching on morality and placing the very existence of our separate Catholic schools at risk ? In the end, however, on May 19, neither the large petition nor their legal right to speak up and vote for Catholic education, made any difference to the majority of the trustees. Do these trustees really know what’s at stake here? and the implication of their vote?

If we don’t agree with the equity policy, what can we do now that it’s passed in principle? Catholic parents should attend the June meeting in greater numbers. Contact the trustees and thank those who voted against the policy and urge those who voted in favor to at least support the amendments that protect Catholic teaching. There is also a solid legal case against the policy by lawyer Geoffrey F. Cauchi and posted by LifeSiteNews.

It is hard to understand why OECTA (the teacher's union) president James Ryan is pleased with the board's vote. He also points out that the policy has the support of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario and he says that he believes the Toronto Catholic District School Board should be in line with all the other Catholic boards in Ontario that have already approved the equity policy in an effort to create bullying free school environments.

Keep in mind that every policy decision in not cast in stone. The battle may be lost, but the spiritual war is long from over. Catholics do have denominational rights and moral rights. There a need to remind trustees they are responsible to the voters, to Catholic teaching and to God. They are not accountable to board directors, union leaders, superintendents, educational officers and any other hired legal advisor.

«Nessun bambino nasce omofobo»

TORONTO - «Nessun bambino nasce omofobo. L’istruzione deve essere la chiave per fermare l’omofobia».
Nella Giornata internazionale contro l’omofobia e la transfobia che si è svolta ieri in tutto il mondo il presidente della Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) parla del ruolo degli insegnanti e del coinvolgimento degli studenti, della scuola e dei membri della comunità per far fronte a un fenomeno sempre più diffuso.
«La scuola ricopre un ruolo fondamentale nella sensibilizzazione degli studenti - spiega Hammond - L’istruzione può contribuire a far scomparire e a sradicare quei miti negativi che ruotano intorno all’omofobia e alla discriminazione di cui gay, lesbiche e transessuali sono vittime ogni giorno. Non solo gli insegnanti coinvolgono gli studenti in discussioni inerenti a questo tema ma devono intervenire vietando commenti omofobi e discriminatori. In quanto educatori e persone che fanno parte di una società non dovremmo tollerare espressioni razziste o omofobe».
Non sono solo gli studenti che hanno bisogno di uno spazio al sicuro dove imparare, ricorda Hammond. «Anche gli insegnanti omosessuali e transessuali hanno bisogno di un luogo dove l’omofobia non sia né tollerata né permessa. In quanto organizzazione che rappresenta gli insegnanti delle scuole elementari di tutto l’Ontario dobbiamo continuare a procurare informazioni ai nostri membri su omosessuali. Hanno il diritto a un ambiente professionale e produttivo».
E gli insegnanti rappresentano il buon esempio da seguire, quindi. «Il concetto di diversità e rispetto per gli altri - aggiunge Hammond - rientra nei comportamenti acquisiti e gli educatori devono fungere da modello in classe e nella comunità scolastica». Nessuno nasce omofobo, ricorda il presidente della ETFO. Società, famiglia e scuola diventano così i tre denominatori comuni nella lotta contro l’omofobia.
«Nel periodo dello sviluppo e della socializzazione del bambino le paure, le ansie di genitori nei confronti di gay, lesbiche e transessuali si riflettono su di lui. Paure che vengono a volte rinforzate dalla società. A tutto questo si aggiunge una mancanza di informazioni accurate sugli omosessuali, sui loro diritti e sulla loro funzione all’interno della società».

La famiglia ha un compito fondamentale. «Molto dipende da come i genitori, in quanto adulti, trattano questo tipo di argomento e da come reagiscono davanti a certi comportamenti omofobi». Reazione che viene, quindi, assorbita dal bambino.
L’ETFO, che comprende 76mila insegnanti e professionisti delle scuole elementari pubbliche nella provincia, mette a disposizione degli studenti diversi materiali e risorse. Oltre alla campagna “Positive Space and Positive Place” anche “Free from Fears”, una delle numerose iniziative che mirano a un mondo libero dalle paure e che rientrano nella “Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy” introdotta nel 2009 dal ministero dell’Istruzione. «Attraverso discussioni sull’omofobia e sulla diversità la scuola coinvolge gli studenti a seconda delle fasce di età. È una sorta di approccio investigativo».
Risale a pochi giorni fa uno studio dell’università di Winnipeg condotto dalla professoressa Catherine Taylor su 3.700 studenti canadesi tra il dicembre del 2007 e il giugno 2009. Secondo il sondaggio i commenti omofobi sono parte integrante e ormai accettata nella comunità scolastica. Alcune espressione vengono addirittura pronunciate dagli insegnanti.
“Gli LGBTQ (la sigla che racchiude gay, lesbiche, bisessuali, queer e trans, ndr) - si legge nello studio - sono esposti a un linguaggio che insulta la loro dignità durante la loro esperienza scolastica. I giovani che hanno familiari LGBTQ continuano a vedere i propri cari denigrati”.
«I risultati confermano ciò che avviene ogni giorno - commenta Hammond - Il 14 per cento degli studenti, uno su sette, si è detto “non esclusivamente eterosessuale”. Il 70 per cento ha sentito pronunciare espressioni come “sei così gay” ogni giorno a scuola e il 48 per cento ha sentito parole come “faggot”, “lezbo” e “dyke”. Il 10 per cento dei LGBTQ ha sentito commenti omofobi dagli insegnanti. Questo è inaccettabile».
Hammond ha parlato con vittime di omofobia in più occasioni. «Anche all’interno della mia famiglia ho un fratello gay e una sorella lesbica. So molto bene cosa significhi lottare ogni giorno contro le discriminazioni per il rispetto della loro identità. Mio fratello fu picchiato da tre individui quando era nel Grade 8. Erano gli inizi degli anni Settanta quando l’omofobia era più sentita».

La Giornata internazionale contro l’omofobia - che ha come obiettivo quello di promuovere e coordinare eventi internazionali di sensibilizzazione e prevenzione per contrastare un fenomeno in aumento - fu creata in Canada per la prima volta nel 2003 da un’organizzazione quebecchese, la Fondation Emergence. Il Canada è stato tra i primi Paesi a riconoscere e ad accettare la comunità lesbica e gay, ma secondo Hammond «c’è ancora tanto da fare».
«Abbiamo fatto grandi progressi soprattutto negli ultimi dieci anni. Anche l’ETFO ha sempre difeso e protetto i nostri membri LGBTQ, ma c’è ancora tanto da fare».
«Tutti i board e le scuole - conclude il presidente della ETFO - hanno il dovere di creare e sostenere un clima positivo che promuova equità e rispetto per la diversità. Questo permetterà di creare un’atmosfera positiva e soprattutto una cultura di rispetto e tolleranza per l’intera comunità scolastica».
È alle vittime di omofobia che Hammond rivolge un pensiero particolare. «Non tacete davanti a episodi di intolleranza. Denunciate. Avete il diritto di vivere nella società e di essere rispettati e protetti come individui».

The Background

I am a retired teacher with the Toronto Catholic District School Board, (TCDSB). I have taught in three high schools as well as teaching students under the care of the Catholic Children's Aid Society. I never thought for a moment during my entire career that I would find myself in the position of having to defend the Catholic faith and religious freedom in Canada.

Currently, schools in the province of Ontario are in the process of implementing the Ministry of Education's Equity and Inclusive Policy.

The first consultation meeting for the TCDSB took place at St. Mary's School on April 18, 2011. On April 27, 2011 a second meeting took place with parents, students and board administrators at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School. There was a pretense of giving those who attended a chance to voice their concerns and to suggest changes. However, both meetings were orchestrated to manufacture consent in favour of the policy. The trustees are scheduled to vote on this important issue on May 19, 2011.

Meanwhile, the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario Bishops and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association have already agreed to permit the province’s publicly funded Catholic schools to set up a network of clubs to deal with bullying as it relates to sexual orientation.

What is the Argument?

In the Toronto Catholic District School Board's guideline called, "The Catholic Vision of Equity and Inclusivity", under the section titled, "Laws and Interpreting Principles" we find this statement: "In fact in some areas, such as pastoral care of persons dealing with same-sex attractions, long before the government became involved, the bishops of Ontario led the way in setting out a holistic approach rooted in the Gospel, in the virtue of chastity which alone brings true freedom, and in a sensitive respect for the individual."

The problem is how can you ask students to practice chastity if you're going to let them set up “gay” alliances whose very existence says that what they are doing is normal, inclusive and equitable? As a teacher and parent, I believe the students are being morally misled. If we love our students, we need to tell them that homosexual acts are morally against the teaching of the Church. We need to share with them the Church's teaching about human love and the dignity of the human person. We need to have the moral courage to tell them that while in high school they are too young to be experimenting with sex. We need to humble ourselves and pray with them and for them for God's grace. How are school administrators going to protect students with various sexual orientations? An orientation is not like a person's gender that can easily be identified.

The Catholic Church

Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, permanent representative of the Holy See to the United Nations, in his address at the 16th Session of the Human Rights Council on "Sexual Orientation" said this: "Human sexuality, like any voluntary activity, possesses a moral dimension: It is an activity which puts the individual will at the service of a finality; it is not an 'identity.' In other words, it comes from the action and not from the being, even though some tendencies or “sexual orientations” may have deep roots in the personality. Denying the moral dimension of sexuality leads to denying the freedom of the person in this matter, and ultimately undermines his/her ontological (state of existence) dignity." In every school, there should be respect for all students because we are all made in God's image.

In an Advent Mass Homily to the faculty and students of the Roman states universities, on Dec. 10, 2002, Blessed John Paul II makes this morally instructive statement: "I remember my own experience of the university. From daily contact with students and professors I learned that it is essential to provide an integral formation that will prepare young people for life: an education that educates them to assume their role in the family and in society with responsibility and with not just a professional, but also a human and spiritual competence."

Gay alliances

“Gay alliances” are another way of over-sexualizing and distorting sexual relations for young students. There is no need for this kind of sexual exploitation of the young and innocent. Discrimination based solely on sexuality or focusing on sexual orientation is to demean the human person and reduce students to an activity, a feeling or a thing.

Part four of the TCDSB guideline asks this question: "Is there an increase in harassment of this type (bullying or harassment of gay students) in Catholic schools?" The answer given in the document is: "we are not aware of an increase in harassment of this type, but any type of bullying or harassment in Catholic schools will not be tolerated." So why is the TCDSB and the trustees specifically addressing bullying related to sexual orientation if, by their own admission, they have not seen an increase in such behaviour? Their own evidence would seem to indicate that there is no need to start these support groups in schools. Why not combat all forms of bullying without distinctions? Through baptism, Christians are already called to love God and every neighbour.

The Conclusion

I want to conclude, since we are dealing with young students, by quoting from the recently published YOUCAT: Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church. This Catechism book will be given to every participant attending this year's World Youth Day to be held in Madrid. The text is structured in a Question and Answer format.

Question 65 states: "What about people who feel they are homosexual?" Here's the answer: "The Church believes that, in the order of creation, men and women are designed to need each other's complementary traits and to enter into a mutual relationship so as to give life to children. That is why homosexual practices cannot be approved by the Church. Christians owe all persons respect and love, regardless of their sexual orientation, because all people are respected and loved by God."

As Catholic teachers, administrators and parents we must pray for the moral responsibility and courage to teach this. No provincial government is qualified to do this. The state ought to protect not take away religious freedom from its citizens.

Personal example

Let me also share a personal example with you. When I taught students in the alternative program with the Catholic Children's Aid Society, I'll never forget the day a student came to class and announced out loud, saying he was "gay". After constant arguments and even a fight, it took several weeks to bring that class back to "normal".

The new student got a lot of attention and most of it was negative. Both myself and the youth worker encouraged the entire class to respect and to give everyone a safe learning space. At one point, the new student wanted to go out on a date. According to him, he had met this other gay person on the Internet. He believed what he had been told at face value. We needed to explain that the information on the Internet is not always true....lots of room for counselling here.

Both the youth worker and myself decided to try get this student to focus more on his education and less on his sexuality and dating. It was a difficult process, but within months and with much support, he began to be more interested in his school work and hardly talked about his sexuality. It soon was no longer the issue in our class. Six months later he returned to a regular school.

I'm not saying that this is the answer in all cases, but I do want to say that educators, parents and students need to primarily focus on education and not sexuality. Once students know that you care for them, they will trust that you truly have their well being at heart and they will respond with the appropriate behaviour.

Another consideration

The denominational nature of the Catholic School System is never to be considered an issue of discrimination of any kind. This denominational right is protected in law by the British North America Act (Constitution Act 1867) section 93 and also in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (April 17, 1982) section 29.

Why have Catholic boards and trustees across the province been so reluctant to defend this right? It is the Catholic community that has been lied to and bullied into implementing the policy. There is no moral, but also no legal reason for accepting the Equity and Inclusivity policy.

Lastly, whether we call them equity groups or gay alliances the message will certainly be confusing to the average student. Who will protect the majority of students? This is why as a Catholic teacher and parent I feel compelled to speak up for Catholic education. I hope and pray that on May 19, 2011 our Toronto Catholic school trustees vote to amend the Equity policy to truly reflect Catholic teaching.

Even better, they have a constitutional right to reject this policy completely. Our students, our children, need our prayers and our guidance for their sake and the sake of Catholic education in Ontario.

SOGNANDO LUI ( DREAMING OF HIM) : June 12 in St. Peter, a celebrative concert in honour of Blessed Pope John Paul II.

On Sunday, June 12 at 4:00 pm in St. Peter’s Church in Woodbridge, we will have the opportunity to attend a memorable concert to celebrate and honour Pope John Paul II’s Beatification, which took place on the Sunday of the Divine Mercy of this year.

Only six years after his death, John Paul II has been hastened to beatification due to the saintly nature of his life, his death and after his death.

To celebrate this event, we will have for the first time in Canada an international guest singer from the famous La Fenice Theatre in Venice, Italy: soprano Michiko Hayashi. This well-known singer was invited by UCEMI to perform live for the Toronto audience a selection of songs from her recent CD “Sognando Lui”, with original music and lyrics written in honour of Blessed John Paul II and composed by Giovannina Menin.

These beautiful songs, accompanied by electronic music, communicate true faith and their lyrical texts are splendidly interpreted by the powerful voice of Michiko. It will surely touch all listeners, causing them to soar in a heavenly dream.

Those who love beautiful music will be happy to know that the great artist from Venice will be performing with Coro San Marco Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Vergine degli Angeli”, Mozart’s “Laudate Dominum”, and with tenor Michael Nasato “Ave Maria”, an original composition by Italian Canadian musician Giampietro Posocco, who will be at the concert accompanying his composition on the trumpet.

There will also be local talents, like Alesandra Trimelliti, who will perform Gospel music in English.

The concert will conclude with a grand finale, where all the performers and the audience will join in singing “Va Pensiero” as a seal of our spiritual journey towards our Heavenly Home.

Light refreshments will follow the concert for those who wish to stay and meet artist Michiko and have her sign her CD they’ve purchased.

The concert will be filled with emotional moments.

It will be opened by Rev. Thomas Rosica, who personally knew Blessed John Paul II very well, as he organized his visit to Toronto in 2002.

Rev. Rosica was the national director of World Youth Day that year.

PADRE BRESSANI: l’apostolo della modernità che viveva tra gli Huroni.

TORONTO - Annoiato dalle derive della letteratura contemporanea, il professor Francesco Guardiani ha ripescato dal “secolo guasto” un piccolo capolavoro di “modernità tipografica” e lo ha restituito ai lettori di oggi in una veste più accessibile (con note a piè di pagina, traduzioni dal latino delle numerose citazioni bibliche, molti ritocchi interpuntivi, segmentazione dei paragrafi etc.). Si tratta della Breve relatione di padre Francesco G. Bressani, il missionario gesuita sbarcato in Canada nel 1642 per recarsi nella Missione degli Huroni, poi catturato e torturato dagli Irochesi. Una storia di eroismo e al contempo di grande umanità, che si è svolta non lontano da Toronto, nell’attuale Midland, quando il Canada era un Paese dove non si poteva “andare con altre barche che di scorza”, “senza grano né vino necessarij per il santo officio della Messa” e senza un albergo “nello spatio di più di 700 miglia”.
Il libro si può leggere come documento storico-antropologico, come testo devozionale o come repertorio d’avventure, ma su ogni chiave di lettura emerge «l’attualità inossidabile del messaggio di fratellanza di Bressani». Il professor Guardiani, un “libridinoso” che insegna letteratura all’Università di Toronto, profondo conoscitore (ed estimatore) del ’600, esperto di Mastriani, ha riesumato l’opera dagli scaffali della Toronto Reference Library. Guardiani, che ha avuto come maestri Northrop Frye e Marshall McLuhan, ha riconosciuto nell’impostazione programmatica dell’opera e nella prosa piana del Bressani «l’inizio di nuova cultura che porterà ai trionfi della modernità, all’individualismo e alle prime forme di democrazia moderna». È per questo che secondo lui padre Bressani è stato un apostolo della modernità e che la Breve relatione «costituisce una tessera importante del mosaico sociale che è il milieu culturale, non solo italiano ma europeo, intorno alla metà del Seicento». Secolo appestato, “guasto e corrotto”? De Sanctis si è sbagliato. «Marino, Galileo, Campanella, Bacon, Shakespeare, Lope de Vega, insomma le colonne portanti della cultura moderna, sono nati nella stessa decade e anche se non comunicano hanno gli stessi miti di riferimento, perché dove è arrivata la stampa sono arrivati gli stessi effetti. Sono i campioni di quella che McLuhan definisce la cultura dell’uomo tipografico - spiega Guardiani, che da tanti anni insegna anche un corso intitolato “Dal manoscritto alla stampa. Dalla stampa ai computer” - Insomma la letteratura a cavallo fra ’500 e ’600 presenta un “modo nuovo” di rappresentazione, per dirla con Frye, legato alle imprese di eroi fondativi di una nuova civiltà». Da qui il passo verso i gesuiti è breve. «Nel ’600 si assiste alla nascita di una dimensione evangelica, direi quasi di proto marxismo, di emancipazione delle masse. E nei primi gesuiti, dalla fondazione dell’ordine nel 1534 alla sua abolizione nel 1773, la dimensione emancipativa è molto evidente - spiega Guardiani - Il loro scopo era prima di tutto quello di dare una dimensione umana attraverso la cultura e solo dopo si interessavano all’evangelizzazione». I gesuiti, per esempio, imparavano la lingua autoctona dei popoli con i quali entravano a contatto e insegnavano loro a leggere e a scrivere. Anche Bressani quando parla della missione “stentatissima e temeraria” degli Huroni si sofferma su “le gran difficoltà d’impararne la lingua” “con la H che gli Italiani difficilmente pronuntiarebbero”.

«I primi gesuiti sono personaggi straordinari, forti, generosi, estremamente colti, l’antitesi di quello che diventeranno nell’800 quando l’ordine viene rifondato». A partire dal primo missionario Francesco Saverio, morto tentando di portare il Vangelo in Cina nel 1552, anno di nascita di un altro grande gesuita, Matteo Ricci, che compì l’impresa trentadue anni dopo. «Sono fra i protagonisti assoluti dell’epoca - dice Guardiani - eppure è da considerarsi un lusso che siano citati nelle appendici di storia della letteratura. Le lettere di Francesco Saverio, che parlano delle sue peripezie dall’India al Madagascar al Giappone, sono un libro d’avventure che raccontano di luoghi esotici dove c’è un’umanità con cui dialogare, non da ammaestrare». Sicuramente Bressani aveva letto queste storie e ne era rimasto talmente affascinato che già a 14 anni scrive al preposito generale dell’ordine, Muzio Vitelleschi, chiedendo di essere mandato in missione nelle Indie del Nord America, le più pericolose. Ma passano quattordici anni prima che si compia il “Santo viaggio” e che Bressani, ordinato sacerdote nel 1637 a 25 anni, sbarchi a “Kebek”.
La storia della missione degli Huroni, durata più di sedici anni, è quella di un “fallimento”: Bressani verrà catturato dagli Irochesi, torturato, riscattato dagli olandesi e riportato in Francia nel ’44, da dove riparte sempre alla volta del Canada l’anno successivo. Resterà nella missione di Sainte Marie fino al maggio del 1649 quando gli Huroni vengono attaccati degli Irochesi e fuggono dando fuoco al villaggio dei gesuiti. Inizia una lunga marcia verso Québec, che lascerà pochi superstiti. I padri Jean Brébeuf e Gabriel Lalemant vengono catturati e uccisi, diventando i martiri di Midland. L’epopea dei missionari in Canada, però, non finisce qui, ma qui finisce quella di Bressani, che lascia definitivamente il Paese il 2 novembre dell’anno successivo. Torna in Italia con le mani tutte rovinate dalle torture e diventa predicatore, offrendo un’appassionata testimonianza oculare dei martiri dei gesuiti.
La sua Breve relatione vede la luce a Macerata nel 1653. Quattro anni dopo viene pubblicata anche la carta geografica della “Nuova Francia”, che non aveva fatto in tempo ad inserire nella stampa del testo, e che Guardiani ha riprodotto in scala in appendice al libro. Oltre ad essere «la più bella ed accurata carta del Canada del suo tempo», è anche la riprova che Bressani, missionario, scienziato, astronomo e cartografo, domina a pieno gli strumenti messi a disposizione dalla Galassia Gutenberg e che la sua opera risponde a «un’urgente e moderna istanza di conoscenza», esempio «della nuova cultura europea omogenizzata dalla stampa».

The meaning of John Paul’s beatification

On Sunday, in a formal, public ceremony before hundreds of thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed “blessed” Karol Wojtyla — Pope John Paul II. For beatification, the Vatican requires proof of a miracle attributed to the candidate’s intercession, unless the candidate was martyred for his or her faith.

In the case of Pope John Paul II, the miracle accepted and confirmed was that of the healing from Parkinson’s disease of a 48-year-old French nun. The second miracle — the one needed for canonization — must take place after the beatification ceremony and is seen as God’s final seal of approval on the church’s declaration of holiness. That a person is declared “blessed” is not a statement about perfection. It does not mean that the person was without imperfection, blindness, deafness or sin. Nor is it a 360-degree evaluation of the pontificate or of the Vatican. Beatification and canonization are about personal holiness.

From his childhood, Wojtyla faced hardships that tested his faith and trust in God. He lost his mother when he was nine years old and three years later lost his only brother to scarlet fever. His father died when Karol was 20. His vocation was slowly confirmed during the dramatic events and years of the Second World War. As a young man, Karol was an actor with a local theater group and a robust athlete who loved the mountains and lakes, and an accomplished poet.

He knew the hardship of labour as he cut stones at a rock quarry. He also assisted his friends in smuggling Jews to safety during he Holocaust.

Wojtyla was ordained priest in 1946, as Poland’s new communist regime imposed severe restrictions on the Catholic Church. After two years of study in Rome, he returned to Poland in 1948 and worked as a young pastor. From the beginning, he focused much of his attention on young people, especially university students. World Youth Days were not invented by Pope John Paul II but by the young priest, Fr. Karol Wojtyla, who always made room for young men and women in his life and ministry. In 1958, at age 38, he was named an auxiliary bishop of Poland, becoming Poland’s youngest bishop in history. Named archbishop of Krakow in 1964, Wojtyla played a key role in the Second Vatican Council, helping to draft texts on religious liberty and the Church in the modern world.

During the final years of his pontificate, John Paul II brought suffering back into the realm of the expected in human life. Rather than hide his infirmities, as most public figures do, Pope John Paul II let the whole world see what he went through. The very visible suffering brought on by Parkinson’s disease, severe arthritis and numerous intestinal ailments became part of the pope’s spiritual pilgrimage. Everyone could see that his spirituality gave him an inner strength — with which one can also overcome fear, even the fear of death. His struggle with the physical effects of aging was also a valuable lesson to a society that finds it hard to accept growing older, and a culture that sees no redemption in suffering.

In the final act of his life, before the television cameras of the world, the athlete was immobilized, the distinctive, booming voice silenced, and the hand that produced voluminous encyclicals no longer able to write. Many saw the pope’s suffering as something like the agony of Jesus himself. Several hours before his death, Pope John Paul’s last audible words were: “Let me go to the house of the Father.” In the intimate setting of prayer, as Mass was celebrated at the foot of his bed and the throngs of faithful sang below in St. Peter’s Square, he died at 9:37 p.m. on April 2 while hundreds of thousands of people kept vigil for days in the piazza below the windows of the papal apartments.

Through his public passion, suffering and death, he showed the world the suffering face of Jesus in a remarkable way.

At his funeral mass on April 8, 2005, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, his closest associate at the Vatican told the world that the Holy Father was “watching us and blessing us from the window of the Father’s House.” When the throngs of people began chanting “Santo Subito” at the end of the Pope’s funeral mass on April 8, 2005, what were they really chanting? They were crying out that in Karol Wojtyla, they saw someone who lived with God and lived with us. He was a sinner who experienced God’s mercy and forgiveness. He was the prophetic teacher who preached the word in season and out of season.

He took the message of the Gospel and the story of the Church away from the home office on the Tiber to the farthest corners of the earth through his visits to 129 countries in the 26 years of his pontificate. He taught us not to be afraid. He showed us how to live, how to love, how to forgive and how to die. He taught us how to embrace the cross in the most excruciating moments of life, knowing that the cross was not God’s final answer.

Throughout his ministry, and especially during his entire pontificate, Pope John Paul II preached God’s mercy, wrote about it, and most of all lived it. He offered forgiveness to the man who was destined to kill him in St. Peter’s Square. The Pope who witnessed the scandal of divisions among Christians and the atrocities against the Jewish people as he grew up did everything in his power to heal the wounds caused by the historic conflicts between Catholics and other Christian churches, and especially with the Jewish people. His pontificate was filled with reminders that the saints extend to each other and to us a hand to guide us on the path of holiness.

It is no coincidence, then, that his Beatification ceremony took place on May 1, the Second Sunday of Easter that is also known throughout the world as Divine Mercy Sunday, a feast the John Paul II, himself, established in the year 2000. Where hatred and the thirst for revenge dominate, where war brings suffering and death to the innocent, abuse has destroyed countless innocent lives, the grace of mercy is needed in order to settle human minds and hearts and to bring about healing and peace. Wherever respect for human life and human dignity are lacking, there is need of God’s merciful love. Mercy is needed to insure that every injustice in the world will come to an end. The message of mercy is that God loves us – all of us – no matter how great our sins. God’s mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Essentially, mercy means the understanding of weakness, the capacity to forgive.

In Blessed John Paul II, the Church offers us not a model pope but a model Christian, one who mirrored inner holiness in the real world, and who, through words and example, challenged people to believe, to hope, to forgive and to love. As Canadians, let us recall with gratitude the stirring words that Blessed John Paul II spoke to hundreds of thousands of young people at the concluding mass of World Youth Day 2002 at Downsview Park in Toronto.

“At difficult moments in the Church’s life, the pursuit of holiness becomes even more urgent. And holiness is not a question of age; it is a matter of living in the Holy Spirit.”

“Do not let that hope die. Stake your lives on it. We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum of the Father’s love for us and our real capacity to become the image of his Son.”

We need those words now more than ever.

The testimony of 3 Missionaries and their role in building democracy, peace, reconciliation and justice in Africa.

Fr Valerian Shirima SJ is a Tanzanian Jesuit who has served as Provincial of the Eastern Africa Jesuit Province, and President of the Jesuit Superiors of Africa and Madagascar (JESAM). Fr Shirima’s work, since becoming a Jesuit in 1970, has focused on education and pastoral work.
He is currently on sabbatical in Toronto.

Fr Michael Schultheis SJ is a Jesuit who has been working in Africa for over forty years. Devoted to higher education, Fr Schultheis was the first president of the Catholic University of Ghana, and is currently the
Vice-Chancellor of the Catholic University of Sudan.

Fr Marco Bagnarol is a Consolata Missionary who has been working in Africa too. As a pastor in Uganda, he was instrumental in the construction of aqueducts, digging of wells, and construction of schools and churches. Devoted to a deep universal vision, Fr Bagnarol has been back in Toronto since 2004. He is working on the translation of hundreds of books in English, like Fr. Renato Kizito Sesana’s successful “I am a Nubian” (the story of a Comboni missionary on the side of a people who are fighting to keep from disappearing), and building bridges
in the international community.

Siamo giunti, anche quest'anno, alle festività pasquali che, per i cristiani, rappresentano un momento di riflessione e di gioia alla luce del Cristo risorto. In vista di queste festività ci si scambia sempre gli auguri e gli auspici di pace. Questi auguri sono ancora più calorosi se rivolti a chi ha lasciato la loro patria, come fece a suo tempo il popolo d'Israele, per cercare altrove maggiore fortuna di quanta non abbiano avuto nella terra in cui sono nati. Gli emigranti italiani, a dire il vero, sono andati all'estero non perché perseguitati (tranne che durante il fascismo) ma per cercare condizioni di vita migliori di quelle misere stavano vivendo dopo due guerre mondiali. Ma sempre di un esodo si è trattato e di un esodo assai consistente. Ora, da anni, la situazione è cambiata e tanti immigrati vengono in cerca di lavoro e di benessere in Italia che nel frattempo è cresciuta a livelli medio alti. Negli ultimi mesi, poi, si è aggiunta una nuova forma di immigrazione, quella degli sfortunati cittadini della Tunisia e della Libia e di altri Stati del Nord Africa. Questi sì sono dei perseguitati perché nei loro paesi rischiano persecuzione e morte. Ci corre l'obbligo di fare tesoro della nostra esperienza di emigranti per tenere non chiuse le frontiere e le porte a questi fratelli sfortunati, che chiedono a noi momentanea ospitalità e accoglienza. Non dimentichiamo ciò che Paolo VI implorava oltre quarant'anni fa all'Occidente: suggeriva di lasciare parte dei proventi derivanti dallo sfruttamento delle risorse naturali quali l’oro, il petrolio e altri metalli pregiati, nei paesi dove questi venivano prelevati. Paesi naturalmente poveri come quelli africani. Aggiungendo che se non fosse stata applicata una corretta giustizia distributiva, quelle popolazioni alla fine sarebbero state costrette ad invadere i nostri paesi e le nostre case, a causa della miseria e dell'oppressione. E’ quanto si sta puntualmente verificando in questi giorni ed è quanto ignorano quanti dimostrano chiusura. Certamente i flussi migratori vanno programmati ed equamente distribuiti sul territorio, non soltanto italiano ma anche europeo. Nella legalità, nel rispetto delle tradizioni e dei valori religiosi del luogo e anche dei limiti occupazionali possibili. Già, proprio l'Europa, nata da grandi ideali cristiani, si dimostra ora sorda e indifferente rispetto a queste tragedie e riguardo al peso non indifferente che grava, e purtroppo graverà ancor di più, in futuro sull'Italia. Accogliere i perseguitati, gli oppressi, coloro che sfuggono dalla guerra e dalla miseria è un dovere cristiano che noi vogliamo ricordare a tutti, facendo sintesi di quella che è stata la nostra esperienza di un paese di emigrazione. Scambiarci gli auguri di Pasqua senza fare una doverosa riflessione su quanto sta capitando attorno a noi, significherebbe chiudere gli occhi davanti alla realtà. I cristiani non possono ignorare la realtà che stiamo attraversando, soprattutto quando la situazione impone gesti di carità e di accoglienza. Ecco perché l’Ucemi desidera coinvolgere in questo ragionamento le proprie associazioni e tutti quelli che condividono lo spirito cristiano nell’ affrontare i problemi delle migrazioni. Di sicuro, l’attenzione principale dell’Ucemi è ancora rivolta ai cittadini italiani nel mondo, verso i quali non verrà mai meno l'attenzione della Chiesa italiana e ci auguriamo anche del Governo italiano. Ai nostri politici chiediamo di non ridurre le attenzioni e i fondi necessari a governare in maniera adeguata le dinamiche della nostra emigrazione del mondo, che costituisce il fiore all'occhiello del nostro paese. Lo ricordiamo proprio nel 150º anniversario dell'unità d'Italia, per la cui realizzazione di emigranti ebbero un ruolo considerevole. Prima che l'unità si realizzasse in Italia, infatti, questa si era già realizzata nel mondo attraverso gli emigranti di cultura di lingua italiana, superando le logiche dei piccoli staterelli esistenti sul territorio poi diventato definitivamente italiano. Ecco perché gli emigranti sono contrari a ogni forma disgregatrice del nostro paese e a ogni contrapposizione tra territori. Le notevoli rimesse provenienti dai paesi di emigrazione, specialmente dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, frutto del sacrificio del sudore degli emigranti, hanno contribuito a loro volta a dare sviluppo e progresso all'Italia. Questi sacrifici non possono essere ignorati e neppure dimenticati. Perciò rinnoviamo ancora volta la nostra riconoscenza agli italiani nel mondo, compresi quelli di recente emigrazione, perché mantengono vivi con ore gli ideali dell'Italia e, per quanto ci riguarda, tengono pure vivi gli ideali cristiani, che ben si coniugano tra loro. Confidiamo che tutti gli italiani, che vivono all'estero oppure in patria, sappiano accogliere gli immigrati nel modo migliore, puntando cioè dopo la prima fase di accoglienza, alla loro integrazione all'insegna del bene comune, che non conosce confini. Da questo punto di vista, ciò che sta facendo la Caritas e la Migrantes rappresentano un esempio da imitare e da elogiare. Ci pare questo il miglior augurio di buona Pasqua a tutti i nostri emigranti e a tutti i nostri associati.

Sabato 9 aprile, organizzato dalla Commissione Pastorale Italiana e sostenuto dall’UCEMI, si e' tenuto a Toronto un ritiro spirituale per i laici di tutte le parrocchie italiane dell’area di Toronto.
Nonostante l’accavallamento con altri eventi concomitanti, (come il ritiro dei gruppi di preghiera di Padre Pio in un’altra parte della città), decine e decine sono stati coloro che sono affluiti alla chiesa di St. Jane Frances, in rappresentanza di ben 9 parrocchie delle 15 che di solito partecipano a questo tipo di eventi.
Ad attenderli, ad animarli, a rafforzarli, e dare loro motivazioni valide per resistere al secolarismo e alle seduzioni che da sempre tentano la Chiesa ( potere, prestigio e ricchezza), c’era don Francesco Armenti, un giovane diacono pugliese venuto appositivamente dall’Italia e che, bisogna dirlo, ha davvero dimostrato di avere il carisma per la guida pastorale.
Don Francesco ha esordito, con una domanda a bruciapelo fatta a tutti i presenti: “Che cosa vuol dire essere cristiani?”
Dopo una breve pausa, prendendo spunto poi dalla lettera che san Paolo ha scritto alla prima comunità da lui fondata, cioè quella dei Filippesi (Fil.2: 5-11), ha continuato: “Essere cristiani vuol dire avere gli stessi sentimenti di Cristo, cioè avere gli stessi sentimenti di quell’uomo-Dio che non si è comportato certo come un sovrano, ma come servo degli uomini, mettendo tutta la sua forza d'amore al loro servizio fino alla morte e per giunta, a una morte infamante, quella della croce.
In questo vero e proprio rapporto d’amore, ha affermato don Francesco, Dio ci ha amati per primo, “svuotandosi della sua divinità” e accogliendo completamente la nostra umanità, con tutte le nostre debolezze e fragilità.

Poi don Francesco ha chiesto ancora: Perchè il Figlio di Dio è diventato simile agli uomini? Per amore! - ha soggiunto.Ogni singolo gesto compiuto da Gesù è la dimostrazione massima del suo amore: il Signore si è fatto servo perché i servi si sentano signori, cioè liberi!

C’è chi oggi va alla ricerca del prodigio, del miracolo, che dev'essere ogni volta sempre più straordinario, - ha ricordato don Francesco - mentre lo “straordinario” esiste già nell’ “ordinario” e consiste appunto in Dio che cerca l'uomo e gli propone continuamente un amore che se accolto lo fa partecipe della stessa vita divina. Fede è lasciarsi amare, essere “afferrati da Cristo”- ha detto- facendone proprie l’umiltà, l’amore, la pace, la riconciliazione e la giustizia.

Ha chiesto poi: “la chiesa e la società, secondo voi, sono due entità completamente separate?”

La chiesa, ha continuato, non è separata dalla società in cui viviamo, ma se noi ci adeguiamo a quelle che sono le dinamiche della società, molto difficilmente potremo sentire questo amore di Dio realizzarsi in noi.

Che cosa vuol dire allora essere santi ? Essere santi vuol dire essere in Cristo, essere “nel mondo ma non del mondo”, vivere una vita differente; vuol dire non vendersi, non essere complici, non scendere a compromessi con nessuno perché, se si guarda bene, in fondo quello che si cerca di colpire oggi è proprio il modello di umanità che Gesù ci ha insegnato con la sua vita. Si tratta allora di dimostrare sempre ed in ogni luogo la differenza cristiana (nella cultura, nella politica, ed in tutti gli altri ambiti) affinchè prevalga il bene comune, attraverso dinamiche di servizio, di solidarietà, di accoglienza , manifestando così in noi quegli attributi che sono propri di Dio (Lc 6,36).

Don Francesco ci ha fatto capire che solo chi è capace di rinnovarsi continuamente può rimanere in sintonia col Dio dei viventi, un Dio sempre nuovo, e che chi non lo fa, non è altro che un “morto che seppellisce altri morti”, il “guardiano della fede” che conosce tutto su Dio, ma che poi non lo sa riconoscere quando gli si presenta davanti. La conoscenza del Signore , ha detto con enfasi don Francesco, non è nè un fatto intellettuale, nè fisico, ma è soprattutto una questione di cuore: è solo da una grande intimità con Dio che viene la sovraconoscenza.

Più che le novene, i digiuni, i ritualismi e i sacrifici, - ha detto don Francesco - citando anche il profeta Osea (Os 6,6; Mt 9,13), è l’amore vissuto (coi familiari, coi vicini e con tutti) che ci porta alla conoscenza di Dio! Noi siamo i testimoni della potenza della Resurrezione e dell’Amore, della tristezza che può essere vinta per esprimere la gioia e – ha concluso citando Charles de Foucauld – noi siamo capaci di vivere questa gioia! Poi tra canti e preghiere spontanee sono stati onorati il Santissimo e la sua Divina Misericordia. In chiusura P. Amedeo Nardone, ha avuto parole di profonda gratitudine per don Armenti: lo ha conosciuto per la prima volta quest’anno, ma ne e’ nata una grande amicizia, data dall’ essere sintonizzati sulla stessa frequenza spirituale e così – ha detto in uno scherzoso italiese – lo ha già “buccato” (prenotato) per il prossimo anno. A nome di tutti i laici partecipanti devo ringraziare l’IPC: ritiri come questo ci aiutano al cambiamento di coscienza, rendoci consapevoli che esso è possibile; abbiamo imparato che la vera forza, il motore che porta avanti la storia dell’umanità non sta nella forza dei “grandi”, ma nella “potenza dei deboli”. Il fare profetico di don Armenti infine, di quest’uomo dagli occhi profondi e dal cuore grande, ci ha insegnato che, con tutto il nostro ottimismo e creatività, noi “siamo” la Buona Notizia, noi “siamo” l’annuncio della Resurrezione e del Dio “che viene”.

MESSAGE FOR THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITALIAN UNIFICATION

VATICAN CITY, 16 MAR 2011 (VIS) - Made public today was a Message from the Holy Father addressed to Giorgio Napolitano, president of the Italian Republic, for the 150th anniversary of the political unity of Italy, which falls tomorrow 17 March.

In the Message, which Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B. delivered to President Napolitano during a visit to the Quirinal Palace this morning, Benedict XVI highlights Christianity's contribution to building Italian identity "through the efforts of the Church and of her educational and care institutions, which established rules of behaviour, institutional structures and social relationships; but also through her vast artistic activity". In this context he also mentions the influence of such saints as Francis of Assisi and Catherine of Siena.

"For complex historical, cultural and political reasons, the Italian 'Risorgimento' has been seen as a movement against the Church, against Catholicism and sometimes even against religion in general", the Holy Father says. However he also mentions the contribution to the formation of the unified State made by Catholic figures such as Gioberti, Rosmini and Manzoni.

Going on then to refer to the so-called "Roman Question" and "the divisive effects it had on the individual and collective conscience of Italian Catholics", Benedict XVI nonetheless notes that "no conflict took place in society, which was marked by a profound friendship between the civil and ecclesial communities. The national identity of the Italians, so strongly rooted in Catholic traditions, constituted, in effect, the most solid foundation for the political unity that had been achieved".

"The fundamental contribution of Italian Catholics to the republican Constitution of 1947 is well known", Pope Benedict writes. "This was the starting point for the highly significant involvement of Italian Catholics in politics, ... and in civil society, offering their fundamental contribution to the growth of the country, demonstrating their absolute faithfulness to the State and dedication to the common good, and projecting Italy towards Europe".

"For her part the Church, thanks also to the broad-ranging freedom she was guaranteed by the Lateran Pacts of 1929, has continued to make an effective contribution to the common good through her institutions and activities. ... The conclusion of an agreement revising the Lateran Pacts, signed on 18 February 1984, marked the move to a new stage in relations between the Church and the State of Italy. ... The agreement, which contributed greatly to defining the healthy secularism that characterises the Italian State and its juridical system, highlighted two overriding principles which must regulate relations between the Church and the political community: the separation of spheres and collaboration. ... The Church is aware not only of the contribution she makes to civil society for the common good, but also of what she herself receives from civil society".

"Contemplating the long course of history", the Pope concludes his Letter, "we must recognise that the Italian nation has always had a sense of the duty, but at the same time the unique privilege, arising from the fact that the See of Peter's Successor, and therefore the centre of Catholicism, is in Italy, in Rome. And the national community has always responded to this awareness by expressing is affectionate closeness, solidarity and assistance towards the Apostolic See, so as to foster its freedom and help create the conditions favourable for the exercise of spiritual ministry in the world by Peter's Successor, who is Bishop of Rome and Primate of Italy".

- Consegna del Premio “San Francesco da Paola nel mondo”.

Il Premio vuol essere un riconoscimento ai promotori che si sono prodigati in iniziative che hanno favorito l’intensificarsi della devozione verso San Francesco di Paola, Santo venerato in tutto il mondo.

- Proiezione del Film “San Francesco di Paola - La ricerca della verità” di Fabio Marra. Parteciperanno il regista e l’attore Giuseppe Zeno.

L’episodio ripercorre un momento molto significativo della vicenda umana e religiosa del carismatico frate ed è ambientato nel 1467: in un momento in cui molte controversie offuscano la Santa Madre Chiesa, in tutta Europa si diffondono focolai d’eresia. Alla Santa Sede arrivano notizie sul crescente seguito di frate Francesco, un eremita di Paola. La vita esemplare che conduce insieme ai suoi discepoli fa molta presa sul popolo e le alte gerarchie ecclesiastiche temono nuove eresie. Papa Paolo II invia a Paola un suo emissario, Mons. Baldassarre De Gutrossis, per compiere un’indagine…

Le suggestive location sono state individuate nei castelli di Roseto Capo Spulico e di Oriolo, e negli ambienti di romitorio del convento di Paola. Protagonista Giuseppe Zeno, attore di punta Rai e Mediaset e con lui altri due volti noti al grande pubblico: Antonio Tallura (“Incantesimo”, “La squadra”, “Vivere”, “Giuseppe Moscati”), nei panni dell’arcivescovo illuminato, monsignor Pirro Caracciolo, e Gianfranco Quero (attore teatrale ai massimi livelli, con alcune incursioni cinematografiche per celebri registi, tra cui Marco Risi), interprete dell’emissario papale Baldassarre De Gutrossis.

- Concluderà la serata “Gran Finale Musicale” con il Trio di fisarmonica.

- Sarà offerto un buffet di prodotti tipici calabresi.

“Giornata della Fraternità” Il 2 aprile è dedicato alla festività di San Francesco di Paola.

- Solenne celebrazione officiata da Mons. John Iverinci, Vicario Episcopale degli Italiani in Canada, presso la Chiesa San Padre Pio, Kleinburg, alle 11 a.m. I canti saranno eseguiti dal soprano Cesira Frangella, solista nella “Corale” del Santuario di Paola e dal “Coro San Marco”.

Bioethics Matters: Moral Questions About Life and Death

The Italian-Canadian Catholic association UCEMI recently organized a talk on the important topic of bioethics. Dr. Luigi Castagna, a well-known pediatric neurologist and chairman of the Bioethics Research Committee at Scarborough General Hospital, addressed a large crowd of the faithful, on Sunday February 20, at St. Bernard Parish, in North York. Dr. Castagna is also a member of the Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute and is part of the monthly bioethics workshops for students at the Newman Centre at the University of Toronto. In attendance, along with Giovanni Riccitelli, the president of UCEMI Toronto were a number of priests who serve the Italian community: Fr. Vitaliano Papais, Msgr. John Iverinci, Fr. Gianni Carparelli and Fr. Amedeo Nardone.

Dr. Castagna began his presentation and framed the whole issue saying that the topic of bioethics is large, filled with many hot-button issues and so only an overview was possible in a speech. Bioethics tries to better understand the moral concerns arising from the many new reproductive technologies and also from end-of-life issues, such as euthanasia and assisted-suicide. He mentioned two of the leading thinkers on this subject. Some great work is being done by Dr. Margaret Somerville in Canada and in the US by Dr. Edmund Pellegrino.

Ethics is essentially to think about the values and principles that we use to make moral decisions in our lives. When we apply this moral code to medical and end-of life questions, we are dealing with bioethics matters. His talk was centred on bioethics from a Catholic perspective. The topics are numerous: euthanasia, assisted-suicide, stem-cell research and in vitro fertilization. Dr. Castagna told the audience that science alone cannot give all the answers to these questions. This where the teaching of the Catholic Church can help us. In order to deal with these issues ethically, we must keep in mind the meaning and dignity of the human person.

In Canada, presently euthanasia and assisted-suicide are illegal. Private member bills have been proposed in the House of Commons and in the Quebec Member of Parliament. However, the legislation has been defeated. In Quebec, currently hearings are continuing on legalizing euthanasia and assisted-suicide. There was reference here to Sue Rodrigues who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. She went as far as the Supreme Court of Canada in attempt to have a physician assist her to end her life. The Court in a 5-4 decision ruled that the Criminal Code ban on euthanasia and assisted-suicide were constitutional. This case raised the moral question, "Do we own our body?" The Catholic response is a resounding no; life is a gift of love from God.

“We need to do science with a moral responsibility”, Dr. Castagna said. “We have seen the horrors of utilitarian science during the Nazi regime and other harmful experiments done during the last century.” How to best use new scientific discoveries has divided both public opinion and that of scientists themselves. This has become more complicated because it has entered the political sphere. He said that when a society begins to seriously discuss end-of-life issues we must look for the real reasons behind the debate. A number of explanations are possible: the high cost of the heath care, our loss of the respect for life at all stages and the very questioning of the meaning of suffering. These reasons while they may serve to tell us about the changing life attitudes in our societ, should not be used to rationalize away our Christian moral and faith responsibilities.

Dr. Castagna gave examples of this from his work. He said he sees the important role of faith with his very young patients who are dying. Just because somebody is terminally ill should not mean we do not protect them from unethical procedures or from giving them the best care possible. The Catholic teaching on this is clear: the dignity and equality of persons is absolute; it's not conditional. Life must be respected from birth to natural death. The value of human life should not depend on the state of one's health: we are children of God, made in God's image and so our dignity comes from the inviolability of everyone's life.

In cases where we are dealing with palliative care, we must do all we can with medication and better care to alleviate pain and suffering as much as possible. On this issue, Dr. Castagna referred to the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care, in its Charter for Health Care Workers. There they are reminded about how important it is for patients to know they are always in the presence of God’s love, even as they approach the last days of life. This can give even the dying person confidence and hope.

In the end, together with health care professional the Church can help Catholics make difficult choices when faced with life and death decisions. Science and religion, faith and reason do not need to be at odds, but can compliment one another.

Per la prima volta, la bioetica, una delle tematiche più complesse e delicate della società contemporanea, è stata affrontata lo scorso 20 febbraio dalla comunità cattolica italiana torontina. Nella sala di St. Bernard gremita per l’occasione da religiosi, sacerdoti e laici provenienti da numerose parrocchie, il presidente dell’UCEMI Giovanni Riccitelli in apertura, prima di presentare il prestigioso relatore, il noto neuropediatra Dr. Luigi Castagna, ha ribadito la volontà di continuo aggiornamento conciliare e di collaborazione con l’Arcidiocesi, di cui la conferenza è il frutto. Il Dr. Castagna, questo giovane medico, già presidente del comitato di ricerca Bioetica dello Scarborough General Hospital, con alle spalle lavoro umanitario in Equador, Bolivia, Honduras e Haiti, si è rivelato subito un uomo di profonda cultura e umiltà. In uno splendido italiano ha saputo chiarire e snocciolare con dovizia concetti come fecondazione assistita, maternità surrogata, clonazione, crioconservazione, testamento biologico, cellule staminali, eutanasia attiva e passiva, volontaria e involontaria, suicidio assistito, terapia del dolore e accanimento terapeutico. Tecniche che dividono, creano confusione a causa della loro complessità, e che spesso non tengono conto di settori dell’opinione pubblica che le oppongono in quanto immorali. In conseguenza di ciò –ha detto il Dr. Castagna- bioeticisti come Edmund Pellegrino (USA) e Margaret Somerville (Canada) hanno acquistato notorietà nei massmedia come esperti nel dibattito politico e pubblico. Il Dr. Castagna ha parlato anche delle manipolazioni genetiche attuate dai Nazisti e da alcune case farmaceutiche su bambini del terzo mondo e handicappati. Ha parlato dei casi di Terry Schiavo, Piergiorgio Welby, Eluana Englaro e infine di Joseph Maraachli, il bimbo di London (Ontario) di soli 13 mesi a cui deve essere staccata la spina in questi giorni e per cui i genitori chiedono una morte dignitosa: casi che continuano a interpellare le nostre coscienze sul principio della sacralità della vita.

Dal timore di un aumento incontrollabile delle spese sanitarie, dovuto all’aumento della longevità e quindi delle malattie croniche, che spesso richiedono cure prolungate e costose, è scaturito ultimamente un dibattito sulla legalizzazione dell’eutanasia e del suicidio assistito. In Canada, ha detto, una proposta di legge per l’eutanasia è stata recentemente sconfitta nella camera dei comuni, mentre in Quebec un’inchiesta dell’opinione pubblica ha evidenziato un numero sostanziale di medici che si sono espressi a favore della proposta. Proponenti e oppositori sono d’accordo sull’importanza di alleviare la sofferenza del malato, ma non sulla concezione della dignità umana: per gli uni consiste soprattutto nella libertà delle scelte e sulla qualità della vita; per gli altri, soprattutto cristiani e seguaci di altre religioni storiche, la dignità consiste nella natura umana stessa, in quanto imagine di Dio e oggetto del suo amore infinito, indipendentemente da età, stato di salute, sviluppo o qualità della vita. La sofferenza, per i cristiani, fa parte del tessuto dell’esistenza terrena: infliggerla al prossimo o astenersi dal prestare soccorso al sofferente sono mancanze gravissime, anche se sono richieste! La dignità–ha sostenuto con enfasi il dottore, citando anche la prefazione al Catechismo della Chiesa Cattolica e la Pontificia Accademia per la Vita-, si manifesta nella carità attiva di medici e infermieri verso il malato, attraverso terapie per alleviare il dolore fisico, ma anche trasmettendogli un senso di speranza. La speranza non risiede nella tecnologia, bensì nel perdono, nella resurrezione e nella vita eterna! È il discorso religioso che dà consolazione, non quello tecnologico! Per i pazienti che richiedono l’eutanasia in genere la morte non è nè imminente, nè il dolore è intrattabile! Depressione, senso di futilità della vita, timore di essere un peso per i membri della famiglia e della società sono le vere cause del desiderio di morire. Farmaci che controllano la depressione, risposte amorevoli da parte della famiglia, solidarietà da parte della comunità e un medico esperto nell’amministrare le cure palliative e della terapia del dolore sono le condizioni per fare riacquistare la dignità al paziente.

Altrettanto validi e qualificanti sono stati i contributi del pubblico: dalla storia molto commovente di P.Nazareno al capezzale della sorella in coma, “tra scienza che dice troppo e cuore che dice che vuole vivere”, alla “speranza che crede nei miracoli” del Cav. Fracassi, dalla “fede senza paura” testimoniata da Filomena Ricci che ha già subito 36 operazioni(4 per tumori), alla discussione sulla situazione degli anziani nelle case di riposo che richiedono molte energie, qualche familiare che li assisti, che gli parli e non li faccia sentire mai soli.

Proprio nel weekend dedicato alla famiglia, il Dr. Castagna ha voluto sottolineare che viviamo in una cultura in cui tutte le istituzioni sembrano orientate a promuovere un certo stile di vita, basato sul successo, sui piaceri e sui possedimenti materiali e meno sulle relazioni della famiglia e dell’amicizia, ma-ha detto- non tutti possiamo avere ricchezze, successo ed essere atletici come coloro che hanno il potere economico e politico. C’è bisogno di una conversione, di un impegno per il cambiamento della cultura, di una vera rivoluzione che cominci dalle nostre famiglie e dalle persone con cui lavoriamo! “Il cambiamento verrà dalla base -ha concluso fiducioso il Dr.Castagna-e dalle generazioni più giovani in cui c’è fermento e ho speranza che le cose cambieranno!”. Un incontro davvero ben riuscito che ha lasciato tutti i presenti sicuramente rincuorati e più alti di qualche centimetro.

IL 20 FEBBRAIO L’ATTESA CONFERENZA SULLA BIOETICA

Chi di noi saprebbe rispondere a tono se qualcuno gli chiedesse di fecondazione in vitro? Di maternità surrogata? Di eutanasia attiva e passiva? Di testamento biologico? Di cellule staminali embrionali e adulte? E così via... …Eppure non passa giorno in cui non ci giungano notizie su qualche scoperta del mondo scientifico o di qualche legge, approvata o da approvare o semplicememnte proposta, accompagnate dalla magica particella “bio”: Bio-scienze, bio-politica, bio-etica, bio-leggi.... Le reazioni nella nostra comunità sono tra le più diverse: interesse, ansia, noia, o magari sempre più spesso, frustrazione per non riuscire a capirci di più. La complessità scientifica e le differenti visioni che ispirano questa o quella iniziativa legislativa suscitano infatti reazioni spesso contrapposte, caratterizzate da una carica ideologica che danno al tutto una venatura di pregiudizio.

Il dono della vita però chiede all'uomo, e in particolare ai cristiani, di prendere coscienza del suo inestimabile valore e di assumerne la responsabilità. Questo principio fondamentale deve essere messo al centro della riflessione, per chiarire e risolvere i problemi morali sollevati dagli interventi sulla vita nascente e sulla vita morente. In virtù del progresso delle scienze biologiche e mediche, l'uomo, mentre dispone di sempre più efficaci risorse terapeutiche, può pure acquisire poteri nuovi dalle conseguenze imprevedibili sulla vita umana, specie sulle sue frontiere iniziale e terminale. Varie possibilità oggi permettono di intervenire anche per dominare i processi della procreazione. Se da una parte l'uomo è in grado di prendere in mano il proprio destino, dall’altra è esposto al rischio di andare oltre i limiti di un ragionevole dominio sulla natura.

Nasce così, nelle nostre parrocchie un urgente bisogno di sapere qualcosa in più della bioetica e di cosa tratta, affinché vengano tutelati, in presenza di detti interventi, i valori e i diritti della persona umana.

È quindi lodevole il tentativo da parte dell’UCEMI che (in collaborazione con il Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute e l’IPC e) organizza per il prossimo 20 febbraio una conferenza dal titolo “Bioetica: dignità umana, morte e cure palliative” per fare entrare la comunità italiana, magari in punta di piedi, ma in maniera decisa, nel mondo della bioetica. Senza toni accesi, polemiche, pregiudizi, lotte verbali, ma con il desiderio di capirci semplicemente di più, quella Domenica pomeriggio nella sala della chiesa di St. Bernard (1789 Lawrence Ave), il Dott. Luigi Castagna, noto pediatra e neurologo oltre che presidente del Comitato di Ricerca Bioetica dello Scarborough General Hospital, dopo un’inquadratura generale della Bioetica tratterà particolarmente, visto il grande numero di anziani nella nostra comunità, dell’assistenza agli anziani, delle cure palliative e dei problemi legati al “fine vita”, uno dei più grandi, se non il massimo problema della Bioetica.

La morte, si sà, non può essere nè cambiata nè eliminata, ma è sotto gli occhi di tutti che il morire oggi è molto diverso da quello di una volta, grazie alle tecnologie mediche che hanno esteso la vita e fatto divenire il morire spesso un processo prolungato, piuttosto che un evento improvviso. Oggi, le persone con reni difettosi possono sopravvivere in dialisi per 20 anni o più. Persone affette da cancro incurabile possono vivere per mesi o anni con le radiazioni e la chemioterapia. Le vittime di incidenti d'auto, che una volta sarebbero morti di trauma cranico, possono essere tenuti in vita da ventilatori e tubi di alimentazione. Nel frattempo però, le terapie salva-vita, pur salvando da quelle evenienze che una volta uccidevano improvvisamente, come l’infarto, per un numero crescente di persone significano anche la possibilità di finire in complicazioni croniche o di peggiorare fino agli stati di demenza.

Date queste tendenze, gli interrogativi sulla qualità della vita al suo fine, e l'assistenza ai malati terminali hanno assunto una grande importanza e complessità senza precedenti, coinvolgendo la politica, il diritto, l’etica e l’ economia. Cosa succede, ad esempio, se un paziente rifiuta il trattamento? Che fare con soggetti in rianimazione o in stato vegetativo? Cosa succede se un paziente terminale non ha più la capacità di prendere decisioni? Che cosa succede se la famiglia non è d'accordo con i suoi desideri? Quanto possono essere utili “le direttive anticipate” come il “testamento biologico”? Se dei trattamenti possono mantenere in vita una persona per altri mesi, settimane, o giorni, quando e da chi dovrebbero essere fatti? Bisogna prolungare la durata della vita a qualsiasi costo? Anche a prezzo di una grave disumanizzazione, della perdita delle residue abilità di relazione del paziente? Bisogna affidare sempre la scelta dei tempi del morire ai medici e medicalizzare anche ciò che non può essere medicalizzato?

Chi si prende cura dell’operato di medici e infermieri? Che intendiamo per morte? Quando avviene? Come si accerta?

Con la generazione demografica dei “baby boomers” che si sta incamminando verso questa fase della vita e con le cure di fine-vita che consumano già più del 10% del bilancio annuale di assistenza sanitaria, non fa meraviglia che queste e altre domande continuino a suscitare discussioni, sondaggi e in ultima analisi desiderano una risposta.

Religious Freedom, the Path to Peace

"On January 1, 2011, World Day of Peace, Pope Benedict issued an important message titled, “Religious Freedom, the Path to Peace”. He begins his message by recalling the sad event that took place in Baghdad last October 31. As the faithful gathered to celebrate the Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, they were attacked and as a result two priests and over fifty people were killed. Christians there are routinely discriminated and persecuted because of their faith. More recently six Coptic Christians were killed in a church in southern Egypt. Christian minorities, in Africa, Korea, China and Asia, cannot openly practice their religion because they don’t have that right or they fear for their lives."

La pace e la religione

Il 2011 è un anno cruciale. Nel mondo restano ancora aperti
tutti i capitoli dell'agenda internazionale: dalla lotta alla fame
ai cambiamenti climatici.
In Italia è l'anno del 150° anniversario dell'Unità,
un momento per ripensare la nostra storia.

L'anno che si apre porta con se' incertezze persistenti sulle prospettive di uscita dalla crisi globale, ma anche appuntamenti cruciali nei quali la comunita internazionale dovra' dare risposte alle principali emergenze: la lotta alla fame, la promozione allo sviluppo, il consolidamento dei processi di pace, la minaccia dei cambiamenti climatici e del degrade ambientale, la tutela dei diritti e delle liberta' fondamentali,non ultima quella religiosa.

Il fondamentalismo di matrice confessionale ha accentuato negli ultimi anni la sua stida, mischiandosi alle principali crisi internazionali e spesso determinandole, come dimostra la persistente mattanza delle popolazioni civili in Somalia, ma anche le irrisolte vicende in Iraq, in India, in Pakistan e in mold altri Paesi, come ad esempio la Nigeria. In un simile contesto si iscrive anche l'aumento delle violenze contro i cristiani, troppo evidente per non suscitare interrogativi e per non sollecitare iniziative forti ed efficaci di dialogo interconfessionale e interreligioso. Il contributo delle religioni alla pace resta infatti indispensabile per arginare una tale deriva.

A maggior ragione, di fronte a tali minacce, ha poco senso la posizione di quanti vorrebbero confinare il fattore religioso nella sfera rneramente privata. Certamente non e' pensabile identificare legge divina e legge dello Stato. In questo sta la minaccia del fondamentalismo. Ma il fattore religioso non puo essere definito irrilevante nella convivenza. In un discorso tenuto alle autorita' civili della Gran Bretagna, il 17 settembre 2010, Benedetto XVI ha sostenuto che il ruolo della religione in ambito politico e sociale «non e' quello di fornire le norme obiettive che regolano il retto agire, come se esse non potessero esser conosciute dai non credenti; ancor meno e quello di proporre soluzioni politiche concrete — cosa che e' del tutto al di fuori della competenza della religione - bensi' piuttosto di aiutare nel purificare e gettare luce nell'applicazione della ragione, nella scoperta dei valori morali oggettivi».

A questo compito della religione nei riguardi delle cose della ragione - ha ricordato il cardinale Bagnasco all'ultima Conferenza episcopale italiana di cui e' presidente -, il Papa da' un nome: e' un ruolo, dice,«correttivo», nel senso che, illuminando, recuperala profondita' dei singoli principi e rischiara sull'applicazione che ne viene fatta, aiutando dunque, quando serve, a rettificare Ie distorsioni, a indirizzare meglio l'azione, a non lasciarsi deviare dai riduzionismi concettuali o dalle manipolazioni ideologiche, a non confondere mai il fine coi mezzi e viceversa.

La Chiesa e I'unità d'ltalia

Vale per i rapporti internazionali, per la definizione di nuove regole della convivenza mondiale, e vale all'interno dei singoli Paesi e comunità. Anche per la Chiesa che è in Italia, questo compito appare oggi forse più urgente che nel passato.

Per 1'Italia, che negli ultimi anni ha vissuto un progressivo degrado, il 2011 è anche 1'anno del 150° anniversario dell'unità, un appuntamento che mostra un duplice e contraddittorio aspetto. Da un lato lo spirito unitario e la stessa identita' nazionale minacciano di degenerare in particolarismi senza respiro, se non in vera e propria xenofobia, complice una classe politica volta più ad assecondare un consenso «al ribasso» che a governare i fenomeni della modernità. Dall'altro, sembra invece definitivamente superata la frattura storica che accompagnò il processo risorgimentale.Belfiore. (Del resto, la questione vale anche per 1'altra grande espressione politica popolare dell'Ottocento, cioè il socialismo).

Anche ai massimi livelli istituzionali è riconosciuto il definitivo tramonto di quella che un tempo veniva chiamatala la questione romana. «Il grande contributo che la Chiesa e i cattolici hanno dato, spesso pagandone alti prezzi, alla storia dell'Italia unita' e alla crescita civile del Paese» è stato sottolineato da Giorgio Napolitano, un presidente della Repubblica la cui storia personale non può essere certo sospetta di clericalismo, in un messaggio inviato al cardinale Bagnasco. Da parte sua, nella relazione tenuta a fine maggio all'assemblea dei vescovi, Bagnasco ha fatto riferimento al 150° anniversario dell'unità d'ltalia come a «una conquista e un ancoraggio irrinunciabili», invitando a pensare il Paese «come un insieme vivo e dinamico, consapevole e grato per la propria identità e per questo accogliente e solidale con quanti approdano con onestà e impegno alla ricerca di un futuro più umano».

Va però detto che Napolitano, come in altre occasioni nelle quali si è espresso sul significato di Nazione, non ha fatto una distinzione - che esiste - tra 1'Italia monarchica (e alla fine fascista) e 1'Italia repubblicana nata dalla resistenza. Anche per quanto riguarda il contributo cattolico la cesura è evidente. Del resto, Napolitano ha fatto menzione praticamente solo del periodo della resistenza e della stagione costituzionale, quando «l'intero mondo cattolico, sia pure non senza momenti di attrito e di difficile confronto, è stato protagonista di rilievo della vita pubblica, fino a influenzare profondamente il processo di formazione e approvazione della Costituzione repubblicana ».

Secondo il presidente italiano, «in quella felice stagione istituzionale, esperienze e culture diverse si sono riconosciute in un comune patrimonio di valori: liberta, centralità e dignità della persona, tutela del lavoro, solidarietà e coesione sociale». Valori «alla cui progressiva, concreta attuazione i cattolici hanno ampiamente concorso, con un forte impegno nel mondo della cultura, dell'associazionismo, del sindacato e del volontariato, cosi contribuendo ad arricchire il rapporto tra società civile e istituzioni pubbliche».

Diverso è il discorso sul processo di unificazione italiana vera e propria. Troppo rilevante e troppo duratura fu la questione romana, con la fine del potere temporale del Papa, per contenerla nel breve spazio di un articolo. Tonnellate e tonnellate di carta sono state scritte sull'argomento, senza che ancora sia possibile arrivare a conclusioni riconosciute universalmente. Che l'alleanza tra trono e altare sia stato il principale nemico di tutte le rivoluzioni europee di matrice illuminista è indubbio. Ed è anche difficilmente contestabile che il risorgimento italiano ebbe anche una chiara impronta anticattolica, che prescindeva dalla questione del Papa Re. Della questione romana, nata dalla stagione risorgimentale fu protagonista assoluto e quasi unico, se non altro per la lunghezza del suo pontificato, proprio Pio IX. Esaminarne la figura
nelle sue luci e nelle sue ombre - una figura più calunniata che spiegata da tanta storiografia e, piu di recente, da tanto cinema — e anch'essa impresa troppo complessa per lo spazio di un articolo. Ma sarebbe superficiale ignorare che dopo il breve e strumentale entusiasmo per il «Papa liberale», il risorgimento fu anche anticlericale e anticattolico.

Alle radici
del magistero sociale

In questo contesto erano destinate a sparire anche le voci cattoliche che al risorgimento diedero un contributo di idee - e talora di sangue - a lungo troppo sottovalutato, da Rosmini a Gioberti, da Pellico al padre Ventura, fino ai tanti sacerdoti che pagarono con la vita il loro patriottismo, come don Enrico Tazzoli, uno dei martiri di Belfiore. (Del resto, la questione vale anche per 1'altra grande espressione politica popolare dell'Ottocento, cioè il socialismo).

Se 1'architettura istituzionale e politica del Regno d'ltalia fu certamente liberale - e di un liberalismo destrorso incline a usare, piu che le idee e i principi di liberta, la spada e il bastone, fino a scivolare nelle guerre coloniali, nel fascismo e nell'orrore delle leggi razziali - la crescita sociale del Paese fu certamente nel segno del solidarismo cattolico e di quello socialista. Non a caso, se Pio IX resta il Papa chiuso in Vaticano per protesta contro Porta Pia, il suo successore Leone XIII (che in Vaticano restò confinato anch'egli) resta il Papa della Rerum novarum, la prima grande enciclica sociale, quella da cui si dipana tutto il magistero cattolico del Novecento e di questo nostro secolo appena incominciato. Si puo dunque concordare con Napolitano nel sottolineare il contributo cattolico all'Italia ricostruita dopo la tragedia del fascismo e concordare con Bagnasco sul principio di una società aperta all'accoglienza.

Per tornare alla questione del Papa e dell'Italia, la posizione giusta e quella espressa in poche parole da Paolo VI, forse il più grande Papa del Novecento, almeno per quanto riguarda la capacità di comprendere e di far comprendere che la questione religiosa è questione sociale e persino questione antropologica. Quel Papa ebbe a ringraziare la «Provvidenza che tolse al papato le cure del potere temporale perchè meglio potesse adempiere la sua missione spirituale nel mondo».
La prova della giustezza di tale affermazione, anche per limitarla alla sola vicenda italiana, sta nell'indubbio fatto che - a parte le connivenze con il potere, che ci sono in tutte Ie stagioni e che soprattutto in Italia, ma non solo, mandano talora un certo odore nauseabondo - l'apporto cattolico al Paese ha potuto esprimersi in modo pieno solo con la fine della questione romana. Il che significa, appunto, che la perdita del potere temporale per la Chiesa e stata un dono della Provvidenza, che è il nome con il quale i cristiani chiamano l'intervento di Dio nella storia.

Christian – Moslem Dialogue in Toronto

On October 24th, 2010 Mr. Bahlibi Tekle represented our Chaplaincy and the Eritrean Community in Toronto, and attended a conference organized by the U.C.E.M.I, an association for Italian Migrants. The conference was at St. Jane Francis church Hall.

The main objective of the conference was to enhance the understanding and the coexistence of peoples with different religious backgrounds and specifically the Catholics and Moslems.

Dr. Giovanni Riccitelli, the president of UCEMI Toronto, opened the conference by emphasizing that a dialogue is always possible if there is an open faith with optimism and believe in God.
The speakers were Dr. Slimi, Emam at Khadija Mosque, Mr Genc Tirana from consulate of Albania, Mr. Bahlibi Tekle from Eritrean Catholic Geez Rite community, and Padre Amedeo Director of Chiesa 2000 news letter. More than 100 individuals participated and so many of their questions were answered. Mr. Andemariam Tesfai, Councillor with the Eritrean Catholic Chaplaincy in Toronto, also attended the meeting.
The expectation and hope are that the Moslem Community also want to hear the Christian prospective of peaceful coexistence and cooperation in building safer environments in Toronto and anywhere else in the world. It is through open and frank dialogue that we can look at the future with confidence.

FEDE E GIUSTIZIA: stiamo con Gesu' o con Erode?

Viviamo in un mondo scandaloso che nega l’appello di Dio affinché la vita sia di tutti. Persino nel ricco Canada la povertà giovanile in continuo aumento (Rapporto UNICEF) si assomma all’impoverimento delle risorse ittiche, alla deforestazione, all’erosione del suolo, alle minacce che pesano sull’acqua dolce e ad altri danni ambientali; mentre intere comunità umane vengono disgregate e i mezzi di sussistenza sono perduti, forme di vita e saperi culturali vengono asserviti a profitti finanziari. Oggi i giovani, e i ricercatori della verità e della giustizia che guardano attraverso gli occhi di chi soffre ed è senza potere, testimoniano che l’attuale (dis)ordine mondiale è radicato in un sistema economico, culturale, politico, religioso e militare estremamente complesso ed immorale difeso da un impero che protegge gli interessi dei potenti, che continuano a incrementare profitti e rendite, proprietà e capitali finanziari, mentre una maggioranza sempre più grande della popolazione ne è esclusa e mentre la natura è ridotta al rango di merce; questo sistema di accumulazione di ricchezza alle spalle dei poveri, chiamato dalla bibbia Mammona, è considerato una forma di infedeltà a Dio ed è responsabile di una sofferenza umana che potrebbe essere evitata. Gesù ha detto chiaramente che non possiamo servire Dio e Mammona (Lc. 16,13). Eppure ancora oggi Erode esige il suo sanguinante tributo in termini di vite annullate, di giovani che si vedono estraniati e depredati del loro futuro.

Per gli adulti, gli accomodati, gli accasati, per coloro che si sono creati un mondo protetto e rassicurante da cui difficilmente riescono a uscire o a mettere in comune, che significato ha quel giovane per il quale non c’e’ posto nella società, costretto dalla mobilità a essere sempre in transito, come straniero in ogni luogo? Per pastori e magi, quel piccolo giovane insignificante rappresenta l’epifania di Dio, del Dio che non ha volto, ma che si rende presente con un nuovo volto, perchè di volta in volta Egli prende il volto di ogni uomo (Mt. 25:40). Il Dio-con-noi non si manifesta fuggendo dalla realtà, né facendo scelte che non sono in sintonia col normale vivere, né schierandosi con i potenti, ma promuovendo ogni aspetto genuino dell’umano. In questo quadro noi da che parte stiamo? Con Erode o con Gesù? Con chi viene per “rubare, ammazzare e distruggere” o con chi viene per dare la sua vita per tutti? (Gv.10:10,11).

L’integrità della fede è oggi in gioco: nell’ inchiesta del quotidiano nazionale Globe and Mail ad esempio, l’accusa che i giovani ci rivolgono è grave e seria: “la fede in Dio sembra che non abbia nulla a che fare con la vita quotidiana”, “Come è possibile che tanti si dicono cristiani cattolici e poi appoggiano scelte politiche e amministrative che nulla hanno di cristiano?” “Date troppa enfasi al culto a scapito della vita” dicono, e “senza la pratica della giustizia i rituali diventano una farsa”. Anche la pastorale delle nostre parrocchie sembra affetta da una schizofrenia che da un lato neutralizza la validità dei fedeli laici quando si trovano all’interno dell’edificio di culto, assegnandogli esclusivamente un ruolo di coadiuvanti dei Sacerdoti, ignorando la loro dimensione professionale, familiare, politica: dall’altro li abbandona, fuori da quelle mura, ad una logica puramente secolaristica, per cui si trovano ad alimentare la loro cultura, attingendo non dal vangelo o dalla dottrina sociale della chiesa, ma da giornali e televisioni commerciali, contribuendo in tal modo al caos e alla politica perversa. È questa la laicità dei credenti? Quella di chi non riesce a portare le esigenze e le situazioni di cui il mondo è pieno? Le denunce della Chiesa rimangono spesso solo un nobile gesto, laddove è proprio la pastorale ordinaria, quella di cui bisogna maggiormente tener conto. Oggi più che mai va dimostrato che non ci sta a cuore soltanto la vita nel momento del suo concepimento, o in quello terminale, ma anche in tutto ciò che sta in questi due momenti estremi. Dove sono i laici, quelli prefigurati dal Concilio, che leggono le realtà terrene (cioè politica, economia, famiglia, ecc..) con il vangelo in mano? L’alternativa all’indifferenza religiosa sta nell’abbandonare le chiusure, le inerzie e le stanchezze delle parrocchie, dimostrando il profondo legame tra fede e giustizia, con la presenza e voce nei luoghi pubblici, portando la riconciliazione là dove necessario. Se condividiamo le ansie dei nostri simili e ci dedichiamo con passione alla giustizia, difficilmente potremo ancora essere liquidati dai giovani come “arretrati”, accusati di “stranezze”, o addirittura di essere solo un popolo di “pappagalli”. Si tratta di imparare a dire, soprattutto ai giovani, le ragioni cristiane dell’impegno per la promozione umana e per il rifiuto radicale delle ingiustizie! La nonviolenza e la noncollaborazione al male, insegnate da Gesù e rispolverate da Ghandi e M. L. King, sono terribilmente attuali per una folla di gente smarrita che ha alle spalle il cratere vulcanico della violenza, e di fronte la montagna della pace, da scalare. Noi siamo tra quella folla. E sentiamo che Cristo parla proprio a noi (Mt.25:45). Allora, l’ugurio che ci facciamo per questo nuovo anno, è l’invito a rimboccarci le maniche e ad abbattere i muri fatti di pregiudizi, di tradizioni e di idee religiose ingenue e naïve (così difficili da sradicare!), per vedere finalmente ritornare alla ribalta laici maturi che si prendano le proprie responsabilità con passione ecclesiale e civile. Questo è il compito che ci aspetta affinchè la novità portata da Gesù possa fiorire nella società aprendo orizzonti di speranza.

What Can UCEMI Do in 2011 to Help Build the Common Good?

One of UCEMI's main goals is the idea of Christians working together for greater unity. UCEMI recognizes the importance to create an awareness, in both our parish communities and the rest of Canada, to better live our faith in order to build the common good. This is essentially a spiritual and social mandate to promote a culture of life and love. It was John Paul II who showed the world that armed with just the Word of truth one could be instrumental in bringing down communism in Poland and East Germany, reveal the weaknesses of unbridled capitalism and uncover the futility of trying to build solidarity in a modern culture where self-interest and profits rule the day.

As Canadian Christians we have believed for far too long that the anti-life culture can be accommodated. We see this in the legalization of abortion, same-sex marriage and the efforts to remove religious education in school curricula. Perhaps, we have silently argued: Let’s be tolerant and perhaps all this will just go away. In the name of being politically correct, we have said yes to the current trend by compromising on life and death issues. Many of us have been too afraid or even embarrassed to bring our religious beliefs into the public square.

We have watched as our university campuses no longer welcome free speech when it comes to the pro-life side. Our politicians of every stripe and level of government have firmly adopted a culture of relativism on just about every moral issue. When it comes to sexuality, the more liberal your attitude the better it is. Abortion, homosexual "rights", pornography channels approved by the CRTC and the push for euthanasia are all part of what it now means to live in the modern moral fabric of Canadian society. Today many regard morality as a relative idea, and the very notion of truth is laughed at, if not rejected outright.

Now ask yourself: Have these liberal ideas improved our society? I think not, and there are many of us who support this view. In fact, a laissez-faire morality has done the opposite. Taxpayers are forced to pay for abortions and some want to extend this to euthanasia and assisted-suicide. Pro-life university student groups, like the one at Carleton, have had their funding removed. Religious questions are not welcomed in the pages or the screens of our country’s mass media. Abortion has completely devalued the meaning of life; life has become a commodity that we can buy, sell and discard at will.

So, what can UCEMI members do to try to change this trend as we enter 2011? We must, first of all, begin with prayer, and then humbly try to respond to this question: Isn't it time for more of us to speak up against this anti-life culture? Surely more Christians need to make a public case for truth and for human dignity. If Christian associations like UCEMI don't address these important issues, who will defend the truth?

Sure there are personal risks for taking a stand. We may not be well liked by our family, our co-workers and friends, but that’s a small price to pay in an effort to spread the Gospel. In honest talk, we will find out who are our true friends. But we must also respect and pray for those who disagree with us. In some cases, speaking up may even jeopardize a job or a promotion. The decision to publicly be a witness for one’s faith is difficult, but it needs to done, if we are prepared to live it, and nobody can do it for anybody else. Every person is ultimately responsible before God for the choices made or not made.

The next thing we can do is to try to unite our efforts with other groups, as Ucemi did last year with the inter-religious dialogue conference. Jews, Christians, Protestants and many others are in agreement with us on the important life issues, such as marriage, abortion, the dignity of the human person. In this time of moral crisis, we can put aside our minor disagreements to fight for the common good. There’s a need to defend and promote these basic principles: the dignity of life, the social and economic importance of marriage, and the right for religious freedom and expression.

In addition, we should not be afraid to discuss our ideas with those who do not agree with us. For too long, we have said nothing not to offend others. This approach has backfired completely. You can see the evidence in the legalization of abortion, same-sex marriage and the reticence to discuss religion in public. This attitude of acceptance all the while wishing that the issues might go away has not worked.

Finally, we must alaways put our hope in God. Canadian society continues to promote ideas that have no basis in either natural law or just plain common sense. The anti-life culture rests on contradictory ideas and a morality totally flawed. The truth will have the final Word. I will end with one last consideration: What do you think we and our families can do in 2011 to help build the common good? We all have a Christian responsibility to try to answer that question. The Grace of Christmas

(Note: We thought it appropriate to share with you an excerpt from the Vatican translation of the homily Pope Benedict XVI gave last years at the Christmas Vigil Mass in the Vatican. He reminds us all that, “God is important, by far the most important thing in our lives.” UCEMI wishes everyone a very blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!)

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

"The Lord is here. From this moment, God is truly "God with us". No longer is he the distant God who can in some way be perceived from afar, in creation and in our own consciousness. He has entered the world. He is close to us. The words of the risen Christ to his followers are addressed also to us: "Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age" (Mt 28:20). For you the Saviour is born: through the Gospel and those who proclaim it, God now reminds us of the message that the Angel announced to the shepherds. It is a message that cannot leave us indifferent. If it is true, it changes everything. If it is true, it also affects me. Like the shepherds, then, I too must say: Come on, I want to go to Bethlehem to see the Word that has occurred there…

"Awake, the Gospel tells us. Step outside, so as to enter the great communal truth, the communion of the one God. To awake, then, means to develop receptivity for God: for the silent promptings with which he chooses to guide us; for the many indications of his presence… In every soul, the desire for God, the capacity to encounter him, is present, whether in a hidden way or overtly... The Lord himself is present in our midst. Lord, open the eyes of our hearts, so that we may become vigilant and clear-sighted, in this way bringing you close to others as well! 

"From them (the shepherds) we should learn the inner freedom to put other tasks in second place -- however important they may be -- so as to make our way towards God, to allow him into our lives and into our time. Time given to God and, in his name, to our neighbour is never time lost. It is the time when we are most truly alive, when we live our humanity to the full.

"Most of us in the world today live far from Jesus Christ, the incarnate God who came to dwell amongst us. We live our lives by philosophies, amid worldly affairs and occupations that totally absorb us and are a great distance from the manger. In all kinds of ways, God has to prod us and reach out to us again and again, so that we can manage to escape from the muddle of our thoughts and activities and discover the way that leads to him. But a path exists for all of us. The Lord provides everyone with tailor-made signals. He calls each one of us, so that we too can say: "Come on, ‘let us go over’ to Bethlehem -- to the God who has come to meet us. Yes indeed, God has set out towards us. Left to ourselves we could not reach him. The path is too much for our strength. But God has come down. He comes towards us. He has travelled the longer part of the journey. Now he invites us: come and see how much I love you. Come and see that I am here…Let us surpass ourselves!

"God’s sign, the sign given to the shepherds and to us, is not an astonishing miracle. God’s sign is his humility. God’s sign is that he makes himself small; he becomes a child; he lets us touch him and he asks for our love. How we would prefer a different sign, an imposing, irresistible sign of God’s power and greatness! But his sign summons us to faith and love, and thus it gives us hope: this is what God is like. He has power, he is Goodness itself. He invites us to become like him. Yes indeed, we become like God if we allow ourselves to be shaped by this sign; if we ourselves learn humility and hence true greatness; if we renounce violence and use only the weapons of truth and love."

Congratulations on the newest Christmas stamp! It is truly beautiful! How fortunate we are to have an artist of your talent in our midst! I will be using these newest stamps with a great sense of pride in our connections.

Our exhibits of crèches from across the world will be small again this year due to the construction still underway in the Parish House, but plans are well in hand for the major international convention we are hosting and organizing coming up next year from November 10 to 12, 2011. The time is drawing nearer and we are preparing a major exhibit of crèches from across the world to be set up in the Ballroom of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. The convention will open on Thursday evening, November 10, 2011 with an ecumenical service in St. James’ Cathedral, followed by a reception in the Ballroom and its foyer. As part of that reception, we are planning to have artists and craftsmen demonstrating their work and are hoping that you might be willing to be a part of that – much as you did a few years ago to open the exhibit at St. James’ Cathedral. As I recall, at that time you were in the midst of carving a figure of the Madonna and Child. You set up a stand and people came by and watched you at work and talked with you informally. This time those people will be coming from across all of North America, and hopefully far beyond. Would you be willing to do so again?

NATALE 2010: Canada Post emette un nuovo francobollo di Antonio Caruso!

Ci complimentiamo con Canada Post per aver emesso per questo Natale il francobollo dedicato allla Madonna col Bambino.

Nonostante gran parte del Canada è diventato così secolarizzato oggi, a tal punto che si discute se sia il caso di continuare a chiamare l’abete, albero di Natale, o questa stagione di vacanze periodo Natalizio, o se sia ancora accettabile chiamare i sontuosi cenoni feste di Natale, è incoraggiante il fatto che Canada Post per gli ultimi tre anni ha emesso francobolli di Natale che fanno la differenza: una differenza enorme, perché non sono le solite immagini di Babbo Natale, dei bastoncini di zucchero o delle renne, ma finalmente riguardano i Magi e la Sacra Famiglia.

Questi francobolli raffigurano tutti un tema religioso e sono stati ispirati da un presepe scolpito dall'artista Italocanadese Antonio Caruso.

La tradizione del presepio è stato avviato nel 1223 in Europa e resa popolare da San Francesco d'Assisi. Alcuni anni fa Caruso aveva esibito il suo presepe scolpito, come parte di una mostra natalizia, presso la Chiesa Cattedrale di San Giacomo in Toronto. Questi pezzi del presepio di Caruso sono così venuti a conoscenza del designer Joe Gault, che li ha fotografati, progettandone l'illuminazione di fondo, ed il resto è storia. Lo scorso novembre, Canada Post ha emesso una nuova serie di francobolli sul Natale. La prima emmissione di francobolli, lavoro prodotto nel 2008, ha mostrato i Magi, l'anno scorso il francobollo raffigurava Gesù Bambino e quest'anno è la volta della Madonna col Bambino. E 'una bellissima immagine che dovrebbe ricordarci il motivo per cui celebriamo il Natale. E 'anche la giusta ragione per ottenere questi francobolli e inviarli ai nostri amici e familiari, nonché l'opportunità di parlare ai nostri figli del francobollo e del suo significato. Se non avete visto la serie di francobolli, vi incoraggiamo a farlo. Sono veramente belli e suggestivi.

Il francobollo di quest’anno, della Madonna col Bambino, rende visivamente chiaro che il Natale è una festa religiosa, in cui celebriamo la nascita del nostro Signore e Salvatore. Dovrebbe ricordarci anche che tanta parte della nostra storia quì in Canada, quella dei primi coloni europei, dei francesi, degli inglesi, dei gesuiti e dei Nativi, tra cui gli Uroni, che hanno fatto quella meravigliosa canzone di Natale chiamata The Huron Carol, ruota intorno a questo tempo speciale dell'anno.

Uno dei motivi che ha spinto Caruso originariamente a scolpire il presepe è stato quello di poter visualizzare la Natività nella propria casa. Natale per la famiglia Caruso è molto importante, soprattutto perché ci ricorda il dono di Dio-fatto-uomo. Inoltre, è il periodo in cui le famiglie si riuniscono, gli amici vengono visitati, c’è la messa di Natale e tutte le altre meravigliose attività parrocchiali. Come per la famiglia Caruso, il Natale fa parte della nostra tradizione famigliare e di chi noi siamo.

La statua, chiamata dall’artista, Madonna della notte, scolpita in legno di tiglio, misura 85 cm di altezza e pesa 15 Kg. Il nome è stato ispirato dall'idea di Gesù bambino che dorme in braccio a sua madre. Nel tenero abbraccio di Maria, il Bambino giace sicuro, ricordandoci di come i bambini si sentano protetti dalle loro madri nel buio della notte.

Canada Post ha emesso nel mondo il primo francobollo di Natale oltre 100 anni fa, il 7 dicembre 1898. La tradizione continua quindi ancora oggi con questa Madonna col Bambino. Antonio Caruso che vive a Maple, in Ontario, dove ha uno studio d'arte, è grato che la sua opera d'arte sia stata scelta per i francobolli canadesi. Egli riconosce inoltre l'importanza di un francobollo di Natale per l’intera comunità cristiana. Le sue pitture e sculture si trovano in collezioni private, nei musei, nelle cattedrali e chiese di tutto il Nord America, così come in Europa.

Con le immagini del passato, di Gesù bambino, dei Re Magi e quest 'anno della Madonna col Bambino, milioni di francobolli sono stati emessi da Canada Post. Caruso dice che continua a ricevere molte richieste di maggiori informazioni da parte di persone in tutto il Canada ed anche da diverse parti del mondo. Antonio Caruso: new Christmas stamp!

We Applaud Canada Post for the Madonna and Child Christmas Stamp

This November, Canada Post issued its new Christmas stamps. The first issue of Caruso's work produced in 2008, showed the Wise Men, last year the stamp depicted Baby Jesus and this year it’s the Madonna and Child. It is a beautiful image which should remind us about why we celebrate Christmas. It is also a perfect reason to get these stamps and send them to your friends and family as well as an opportunity to talk to your children about the stamp and its significance. If you have not seen the series of stamps, I encourage you to do so. They are truly beautiful and inspiring.

The 2010 Madonna and Child visually makes the point that Christmas is a religious celebration. We celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour. It ought to remind us too that so much of our Canadian history, including the first European settlers to Canada, the French, the English, the Jesuits as well as that wonderful Huron Christmas song, the Huron Carol, is wrapped around this special time of the year.

One of the reasons Caruso originally sculpted the nativity scene was to be a display piece for his own house. Christmas for the Caruso family is very important chiefly because it reminds us of the gift of God-made-man. In addition, families get together, friends are visited, and Christmas mass including all the other wonderful church activities are attended. Christmas is part of the family tradition and who they are.

Much of Canada has become so secular that we debate whether we can call a tree a Christmas tree, whether the holiday season should be named the Christmas season, and whether it is acceptable to refer to holiday parties as Christmas parties. So, it’s encouraging that Canada Post for the last three years has issued Christmas stamps with a difference. I say with a difference because they feature images not of Santa Claus, candy canes or reindeers, but of the Wise Men and the Holy Family. The stamps all depict a religious theme and were inspired from a sculpted nativity scene by local artist Antonio Caruso.

The Christmas crèche tradition was started in 1223 in Europe and popularized by St. Francis of Assisi. A few years ago Caruso had put his sculpted crèche as part of a Christmas exhibit at the Cathedral Church of St. James Church. Caruso’s pieces came to the attention of designer Joe Gault, who photographed and designed the background lighting, and the rest is history. The statue itself is carved from lime wood. It measures 85 cm in height and weighs 15 Kg. Its title is Our Lady of the Night and was inspired by the idea of the baby Jesus sleeping in his mother's arms. Mary's tender embrace, as the child rests safely, reminds us how children feel protected by their mothers in the darkness of the night.

Canada Post issued the very first Christmas stamp in the world over 100 years ago on December 7, 1898. The tradition continues with this Madonna and Child. Antonio Caruso who lives and has an art studio in Maple, Ontario, is grateful that his art work has found its way on Canadian stamps. He also recognizes the significance of a Christmas stamp for the entire Christian community. His paintings and sculptures are found in private collections, museums, cathedrals and churches in North America and Europe.

With past images of the infant Jesus, the Wise Men and this year’s Madonna and Child millions of stamps will have been issued by Canada Post. Caruso says that he has been getting many requests for information from many people across Canada and also from different parts of the world. You can get the stamp at your local post office or by calling Canada Post. By using the stamp for our Christmas cards and other mail, we can help keep the true meaning of Christmas in our minds.

Canada Post describes the stamp this way, “The first images of the Madonna and Child are found in the catacombs of Rome, and the tradition of Madonna art flourished in Europe during the Renaissance. Inspired by this tradition, Canadian artists have produced spectacular representations of this sacred scene, many of which have been feature on Christmas stamps—traditional paintings (2006), wood icons (1988), and stained glass (1997), to name a few.”

We congratulate Antonio Caruso and we hope that all Canadians use the stamp on envelopes this Christmas season. It’s one way to keep in mind that we need to keep Christ in Christmas and throughout the year. We give credit to Canada Post for selecting and issuing this wonderful commemorative stamp of the Madonna and Child. Canada needs this positive message of love, of hope and of life during Christmas and everyday for the rest of the year.

How to promote a culture of life and family in Canada

To the President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

Dear Most Reverend Pierre Morissette,

The Canadian bishops recently decided to let their ad hoc committee work for another year on developing new strategies on how best to promote a culture of life and family in Canada. In addition, the Bishops announced in their summary report what the committee had accomplished this past year. A central recommendation is to move beyond just the issue of abortion. The report says, “The strategy needs to build a distinct culture which requires a spiritual revival, a change of minds and hearts. In short, it is the work of a new evangelization. The role of the Bishops in this is to provide clear, consistent and vocal leadership in promoting this culture of life and family, while also offering guidance and inspiration.” Bishop Ronald Fabbro of London is expected to present the new plan at their meeting next year.

In the words of this interim report, there’s a need to develop a “a vision of marriage and family life in which spouses are committed to be faithful to each other, life is valued, a living faith is passed on to children, the elderly and disabled are supported, witness is given to Gospel values.” As well, they mention that the Sisters of Life, the Catholic Organization for Life and Family and a number of other Canadian pro-family and pro-family groups were asked for input. The committee during the coming year will also evaluate initiatives already being used to promote and support life and family in Canada. Bishop Ronald Fabbro of London is expected to present the new plan at their meeting next year

These are all laudable objectives and ideas, but I would humbly suggest that the committee revisit Humane Vitae. This encyclical was too readily rejected by many Catholics, including a number priests and bishops. However, the low reproductive rates, the high number of abortions, the attempt to legalize euthanasia and the general decline of the value of life in the West for last forty-two years, are undeniable evidence about the document’s truth and foresight. Most of the faithful don’t know or remember that it was subtitled, “On Regulation and Birth”. If guided by our Shepherds and priests Catholics and others for the first time could find its moral teaching very valid and very useful. After all, it is an encyclical meant to remind and explain to the faithful the Church’s teaching on important human life and family questions. How many Catholics can honestly say they actually read and tried to live the profound spiritual vision of the human person and family found in Humane Vitae, not the slanted news reports or somebody’s opinion from the past or present?

In 1968, the West was being swept by the sexual revolution tsunami and the encyclical was and is still controversial. Many Catholics immersed in the secular culture of the day openly rejected its message or privately refused to follow it. We were lured by the god of will gratification and sexual expression at any cost became the in-thing to do. We are now paying the high social and spiritual cost for this unanchored morality. Catholics were influenced by dissident voices which came from individuals like Rev. Charles Curran. At the time, he was on the faculty of The Catholic University of America. Essentially, he told Catholics they should use their consciences in making any life decision about abortion and contraception. The Canadian bishops sadly followed that line of reasoning by issuing what has come to be known as the Winnipeg Statement which told the faithful they could use contraceptives if they did so in good conscience, and after having made an effort to follow the Church’s teaching. What was and is needed is the “clear, consistent and vocal leadership."

After forty-two years, surely we can see that the problems we face regarding life and family issues are very serious. If we continue down this anti-life road, we are choosing to destroy ourselves. Unless we change our course, a certain demographic winter awaits the West. Yet, few leaders, either religious or political, have the will and the courage to address this fact. I hope and pray that the Bishops’ committee is inspired, along with all the other research they do, to revisit the wisdom and truth found in Humane Vitae. Because we have failed to tackle the central life issues in the light of the truth, Canada and the rest of the West are beginning to look at the only question left: how long will it be before we become extinct? The very low reproductive rates in Europe and North America are telling us this. Then should this darkest of days come, whatever our reasons or rationale for refusing to embrace this life affirming document, will all be irrelevant: there won’t be anybody around to agree with us. And isn’t part of “a new evangelization” to merely remind ourselves of how to live the faith today from what we should have done and learned as Christians in the first place?

OCDSB Student Survey: An Abuse of Parental and Student Rights

The Survey

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will be carrying out board-wide student surveys from November 22, to December 10, 2010. The surveys will collect demographic information on students from kindergarten to grade 12. The K-6 survey contains 30 questions and the one for grades 7-12 consists of 36 questions. Here’s some of what the students and parents will find at the start of the survey:

“For the purposes of this survey, “parent” includes a guardian or caregiver with significant or primary responsibility for the child.”

“Personal information on this form is collected under the authority of the Education Act, RSO 1990, Ch. E.2 as amended, sections 169.1, 170(1), and 171(1). The information collected will be used to support student achievement and well-being and will inform our district and school improvement planning process. It will also inform future decisions about programs, research and partnership opportunities.

THANK YOU for helping us educate for success, inspire learning and build citizenship.”

Refuse to Comply

After examining the content of the surveys, my advice to parents is to refuse to participate. The surveys verbally manipulate both parents and their children. They have very little to do with education, but a lot to do with normalizing gay, lesbian and homosexual orientations. The surveys are an abuse of student and parental rights and privacy. Parents and students are never told the true purpose behind them. Parents should not be persuaded by the statement that the board has the authority to get the information from the Education Act. All school boards in Ontario have all the information they need “to support student achievement and (their) well-being” by simply looking at a student’s OSR, the Ontario Student Record.

The educators or researchers who developed this questionnaire are not being honest with parents and the pupils they are entrusted to teach and to protect. So, if your child is in the formative grades, as a parent you make the decision to comply or not to comply. My advice is to refuse to respond. If your son/daughter is in grades 7 to 12, as a parent you have the right to tell your son/daughter not complete the survey. Explain to your child your reasons for doing so and use your decision as an opportunity to teach them a lesson about democracy and learning.

The survey is not collecting just any information. It asks questions about the private and personal life of students and parents. It’s an attempt to shape how parents and students are supposed to think about the human person and in particular about human sexuality. Parents have so many reasons to be concerned. To begin with, its methodology isn’t transparent. You will notice in the above-quoted board message that they put the word “parent” in quotation marks and it is used as a singular noun. Now why is that? One can only assume it’s to prove, what they already believe, that parents and the family are no longer just made up of mother, father and children. This slants the picture against the traditional family. We must now include two fathers, two mothers, mother or father only and a whole host of other arrangements. We find these “parental possibilities” suggested in question 8, in the K-6 survey. This comes close to creating and promoting a distorted “reality” about the make-up of the family rather than recording it.

Verbal Manipulation

In question 11 of the K-6 survey, the children are asked if they feel they belong in their school. If they don’t, they are asked to choose a response from a number of choices which may explain the problem. Some of these include the child’s gender and actual or perceived sexual orientation. Now what’s the research value for the board in asking all these young children these leading questions? Are they not too young to be sexually labeled beyond the gender designation of male or female? One Ottawa mother reacted by saying the information was adult stuff and too intrusive. I agree.

In the survey for grades 7-12, question 12 on gender, suggests four possibly answers: male, female, transgender and prefer not to answer. In the next question, the student is asked to identify one’s sexual orientation. Nine possible answers are provided: Bisexual, Gay (male), Heterosexual (straight), Lesbian (female), queer, questioning, Transsexual, Two-Spirited and Prefer not to disclose. And in parenthesis the respondent finds these words: “check all that apply”. Parents should see what is happening here: students are being verbally abused. The questions are suggestive and misleading. Are we really making students feel at home in school if they cannot “check all that apply”. Lawyers call this word play, leading the witness; that is, you prompt them to state what you want them to say, and then you twist testimony against them. Students are not on trial. They are in school to learn and be good citizens.

These surveys cross the line into verbal engineering; there’s a subtle attempt to re-shape thought and behavior. What does knowing all this entire private sexual information about students have to do with education and in helping students become good citizens who will build the common good? The Ottawa-Carleton Board, along with all other public boards in Ontario, before administering these types of surveys, should first obtain the written permission of parents. It’s parents who are the primary educators of their children, not board bureaucrats, and it’s parents who as taxpayers will ultimately foot the bill for these unneeded surveys. Catholic boards would best serve their students and the parents by spending the funds elsewhere and just refuse to implement or develop any similar initiative. But parents should be vigilant because in the past, Catholic boards have followed the same policy as the public boards, even when the policy runs counter to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

The Hidden Agenda

The Ottawa-Carleton Board says on their website that they need to ask these sexual questions to improve student performance; they state that sexual orientation has an impact on learning. To support their claim they quote so-called research statistics. However, the Board, unintentionally, in citing the findings from the 2009 Canadian Climate Survey on Homophobia, gives away its true agenda: to create a welcoming and supportive environment for students who claim to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and homosexual. One must make this conclusion since the Board uses findings from the 2009 Survey because what they don’t mention is that the group behind it is Egale Canada. This is an organization which openly promotes the lesbian, gay and transgender agenda all over the country. So, parents should ask themselves, why is the Ottawa-Carleton Board using findings from this study, by a special interest group, to persuade all families to accept their views. The Board needs to come clean and tell the parents and students the truth: they are trying to normalize “alternative” sexual orientations. It’s a back door way of implementing the controversial Ministry document on Equity and Inclusivity.

The Flawed Reasoning

Even the statistics they quote from the 2009 Canadian Climate Survey on Homophobia are selective. The flaw in the reporting is to be found in what they omit. Here are the important findings according to the Board:
“59 per cent of LGBTQ high school students reported they were verbally harassed, compared to seven per cent of non-LGBTQ students.”
“25 per cent of LGBTQ students indicated being physically harassed due to their sexual orientation, compared to eight per cent of non-LGBTQ students.”
“31 per cent of LGBTQ students reported personal harassment on the internet or via text messaging, compared to eight per cent of non-LGBTQ students.”
“73 per cent of LGBTQ students reported they felt unsafe at school, compared to 20 per cent who did not.”
“51 per cent of LGBTQ students reported they did not feel accepted at school, compared to 19 per cent of non-LGBTQ students.”

The problem is that total number of students in the survey is not given. This in itself misrepresents the findings. It creates a verbal map without the picture of the entire country. When you report percentages of 73%, 59% and 51%, they appear to describe an overwhelming reality when in fact the large percentage is only a small number of the students who reported a sexual orientation other than heterosexual. Let’s assume that the entire population in the study was 1,000 students and 20, in all, reported being either gay or lesbian. Then, say that 51% report not feeling accepted at school, compared to the rest of the students. Keep in mind this is not 51% of the 1,000 students in the study, but only 51% of 20. So, in total it would be just 10 students who reported not being accepted at school from a population of 1,000. This would only be 1% of the 1,000 students, and the low number doesn’t have the same persuasive power. In order to counter this, the Board chose to leave this information out and cites only the rather large percentage for impact value. Why do they do this? We can only assume it’s in order to try and convince parents, students and teachers that the LGBTQ population in their words “doesn’t feel accepted.” However, slanting the empirical evidence to prove your case is both poor science and bad pedagogy.
If the emperor has no clothes, he has no clothes even when you say he does, in several ways.

In conclusion, parents should not be fooled by these surveys: it is language corruption and power abuse in an attempt to push a disordered sexual agenda practiced by a minority of students onto the majority. The results will no doubt be used to try to deceive parents and the rest of the society to accept them as the new norm. The Board will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars of public money in trying to make parents and their children believe what isn’t true. It’s an abuse of parental and student rights to privacy and protection. Ontario taxpayers deserve much better.

CONCLUSIONI DELL'INCONTRO PER IL DIALOGO INTERRELIGIOSO TENUTOSI A TEHERAN

Il Centro per il Dialogo Interreligioso dell’Organizzazione per la Cultura e le Relazioni Islamiche di Teheran (Iran) e il Pontificio Consiglio per il Dialogo Interreligioso (Vaticano), hanno organizzato il loro settimo Colloquio, a Teheran, dal 9 all’11 novembre, sotto la presidenza congiunta dal Dottor Mohammad Baqer Khorramshad, Presidente dell’Organizzazione per la Cultura e le Relazioni Islamiche e del Cardinale Jean-Louis Tauran, Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio per il Dialogo Interreligioso.

Al termine dell’incontro, i partecipanti hanno concordato quanto segue:

1. Credenti e comunità religiose, sulla base della loro fede in Dio, hanno un ruolo specifico da svolgere nella società, su un piano di parità con gli altri cittadini;

2. La religione ha un’intrinseca dimensione sociale che lo Stato ha l’obbligo di rispettare; perciò, anche nell’interesse della società, la religione non può essere confinata nella sfera privata;

3. I credenti sono chiamati a cooperare alla ricerca del bene comune, sulla base di una solida relazione tra fede e ragione;

4. È necessario che cristiani e musulmani, come pure tutti i credenti e le persone di buona volontà, cooperino nel rispondere alle sfide odierne promuovendo i valori morali, la giustizia, la pace, e difendendo la famiglia, l’ambiente e le risorse naturali;

5. La fede, per la sua stessa natura, esige la libertà. Perciò la libertà religiosa, come diritto intrinseco alla dignità umana, deve essere sempre rispettata dagli individui, dagli agenti sociali e dallo Stato. Nell’applicazione di questo principio fondamentale dovrà essere preso in considerazione lo sfondo storico-culturale di ogni società che non sia in contraddizione con la dignità umana;

6. L’educazione delle giovani generazioni si deve basare sulla ricerca della verità, sui valori spirituali e sulla promozione della conoscenza”.

I partecipanti hanno sottolineato la necessità di continuare sulla via di un dialogo genuino e fruttuoso. Il prossimo Colloquio avrà luogo a Roma nel 2012.
